IIT Madras’ Annual Technical Festival Shaastra 2026

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is set to host its annual technical festival, Shaastra 2026, from January 2 to January 6, 2026. This five-day event is anticipated to attract over 80,000 visitors and will feature an impressive lineup of 80 events, 130 stalls showcasing innovations from IIT Madras, and a diverse array of competitions, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and shows.

About Shaastra

Shaastra, now in its 27th edition, has established itself as one of Asia’s largest technical festivals since its inception in 2000. The festival is entirely managed by students, with over 750 participants contributing to its organization. It is also ISO 9001:2015 certified, reflecting its commitment to quality and excellence.

This year’s theme, “Artifacts of Arcade,” aims to transform the festival into an interactive, game-like ecosystem. Each competition or workshop will resemble a new level to conquer, blending hands-on learning experiences with a nostalgic touch.

New and First-Time Events

Shaastra 2026 will introduce several innovative events, including:

  • Robo GP: A high-speed nitro-fuelled robotic racing challenge.
  • BioBattle: Focused on biomimicry-driven healthcare innovation.
  • NeuroHack: IIT Madras’ first brain-computer interface hackathon utilizing real EEG data.
  • E-Contest: A coding challenge based on esoteric programming languages.
  • Quantified Dilemma: Merging game theory, psychology, and strategy.
  • Educators Conclave: Part of the VidhyaVahak programme, offering exclusive masterclasses and networking opportunities for educators.

Statements from IIT Madras Officials

During a press conference on December 26, 2025, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the festival’s role in making technical innovations accessible to the public. He stated, “Adhering to our motto of ‘IITM for all,’ Shaastra has helped in reaching out all our technical efforts to the public, demonstrating them and engaging the public to take it forward. Many first-of-its-kind hackathons in core technology areas are planned this year.”

Student Experience

Mr. Mith R Jain, Co-Curricular Affairs Secretary at IIT Madras, shared insights into the student experience of organizing this large-scale event. He remarked, “Shaastra sits at the epitome of celebrating STEM innovation. This year, we are taking it a step further by truly executing the vision of ‘Annaivarakum IITM’ or ‘IIT Madras for all’, by making the various labs and Innovation centres of IIT Madras accessible to all for three days through the Institute Open House.”

Focus on Digital Governance and Social Impact

Prof. Satyanarayana N. Gummadi, Dean (Students) at IIT Madras, highlighted the focus of this year’s Shaastra Summit and Research Conference on “Digital Governance Summit” and “ICON26,” respectively. He expressed hopes for widespread participation and knowledge sharing among stakeholders towards sustainable approaches in these domains. Additionally, he mentioned the commitment to social impact through the ‘Hear4you’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness about hearing loss, which often goes unnoticed but can be treated and supported with medical care.

Encouraging Participation

Prof. Murugaiyan Amirthalingam, Co-Curricular Advisor at IIT Madras, underscored Shaastra’s role in extending science and technology beyond classrooms and laboratories. He stated, “Shaastra offers a diverse range of events, workshops, exhibitions, and shows across multiple technical and business domains.”

He encouraged school and college students, as well as technology enthusiasts, to participate in the events and immerse themselves in the unique experiences that Shaastra has to offer.

Conclusion

Shaastra 2026 promises to be an exciting and enriching experience for all attendees, showcasing the best of innovation and technology. With its engaging theme and a plethora of activities, it aims to inspire the next generation of thinkers and innovators.
