On January 14, 2026, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Hon’ble Union Education Minister of India, celebrated the traditional festival of Pongal with the staff, faculty, and students of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). The event was organized collaboratively by the Staff Club and the Muthamizh Mandram of IIT Madras, showcasing the Institute’s dedication to honoring India’s rich cultural heritage alongside its commitment to academic excellence.

Welcoming the Hon’ble Minister

The celebration took place at the Community Hall of IIT Madras, where the Hon’ble Minister was warmly welcomed by Prof. V. Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras. The welcome ceremony featured traditional Tamil cultural elements, including folk art forms such as:

  • Parai
  • Madattam
  • Mayilattam
  • Poi Kaal Kuthirai

These performances set a festive tone for the celebration, reflecting the vibrant culture of Tamil Nadu.

Pongal Celebrations and Cultural Significance

The Hon’ble Minister also had the opportunity to admire an elaborate rangoli, known as ‘kolam’, created by members of the IIT Madras community. This intricate artwork underscored the festive spirit associated with Pongal, a harvest festival celebrated predominantly in South India.

Minister’s Address

During his address to the IIT Madras community, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan conveyed his Pongal greetings, stating, “Today marks the beginning of the Harvest Year. Many parts of the country celebrate this festival of harvest, sustainability, and our agricultural heritage under different names. In Assam and the North East, it is known as ‘Bihu’; in Punjab, it is ‘Lohri’; in Western India, such as Gujarat and Maharashtra, it is celebrated as ‘Uttarayan’; and in the Eastern parts of the country, it is referred to as ‘Makar Sankranti’. Here in South India, we celebrate it as ‘Pongal’.”

He expressed his gratitude to Prof. V. Kamakoti for organizing the event and shared his happiness in celebrating Pongal in Tamil Nadu, wishing success to all attendees in their future endeavors.

Honoring Tradition

Prof. V. Kamakoti also thanked the Hon’ble Minister for participating in the celebrations, highlighting the significance of Pongal in honoring farmers and cows, and emphasizing the festival’s role in bringing fresh energy and hope to the community.

Interactive Activities

A highlight of the celebration was the Hon’ble Minister’s personal involvement in the preparation of the Pongal pot, symbolizing gratitude towards nature and the farming community. He actively participated in ‘Uriyadithal’, a traditional festive activity that involves the playful throwing of a pot filled with Pongal, engaging closely with students, staff, and residents of the campus.

Sharing the Spirit of Pongal

Following these activities, the Hon’ble Minister distributed ‘Pongal Thoguppu’ (Pongal kits) to members of the IIT Madras campus community. This act reinforced the values of sharing and togetherness that are central to the Pongal festival.

Integrating Culture and Education

The Pongal celebrations at IIT Madras reflect the Institute’s ongoing efforts to integrate cultural values, community participation, and national ethos within its academic environment. The event provided an opportunity for students and staff to collectively celebrate one of Tamil Nadu’s most significant festivals, fostering a sense of unity and cultural pride.

Conclusion

The celebration of Pongal at IIT Madras not only highlighted the importance of cultural traditions but also reinforced the Institute’s commitment to creating a holistic educational environment. By bringing together the community to celebrate such significant events, IIT Madras continues to nurture a vibrant campus culture that values diversity and inclusivity.
