IIM Nagpur Launches Executive MBA in Energy Management for Working Professionals

Nagpur: In a significant advancement in the field of energy education, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has introduced the country’s first Executive MBA program in Energy Management. This program is specifically designed for working professionals in the power, renewable, and allied sectors. The launch took place on Sunday, marking a pivotal moment in the integration of management education with energy sector needs.

Program Overview

The Executive MBA in Energy Management has been developed in collaboration with the National Power Training Institute (NPTI). The program attracted a total of 168 applicants from across India, with 43 candidates being selected for the inaugural batch, representing 16 different states.

Significance of the Program

During the inauguration, IIM Nagpur Director Bhimaraya Metri emphasized the importance of skilled energy managers in driving India’s development. He stated, “In today’s era, energy is real power. India’s development journey will be driven by skilled energy managers.” He referred to the inaugural cohort as a ‘benchmark first batch’ and highlighted that no other business school in India has previously offered such a specialized MBA program.

Metri further elaborated on the economic growth of India, noting, “India is adding nearly a trillion dollars to its economy every year. As we move towards becoming a $35–40 trillion economy by 2047, clean, reliable, and abundant energy — and therefore perpetual learning — will be essential.”

Keynote Address

The chief guest for the launch was Dr. Tripta Thakur, the Vice Chancellor of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University and former director of NPTI, who played a crucial role in conceptualizing the program. In her keynote address, she highlighted India’s impressive growth in power generation capacity, which has increased from 100 GW to 500 GW, with plans to double this capacity within the next 10 to 15 years.

Dr. Thakur stated, “We achieved electricity for all, but the next target is 24×7 quality power for all.” She also noted that 51% of the country’s installed capacity now comes from renewable sources, underscoring the relevance of the new MBA program in the context of India’s net-zero target set for 2070. “This MBA will produce leaders who understand energy, environment, and management together,” she added.

Participant Demographics

Prof. Nikunj Kumar Jain, the course chairperson, provided insights into the demographics of the inaugural batch. The cohort reflects a diverse range of sectors, with 55% of participants coming from public sector undertakings and 45% from private companies. Notably, half of the participants work in power generation and distribution, while 25% are involved in renewable energy and sustainability roles.

Approximately 27% of the participants have 10 to 15 years of experience, representing prestigious organizations such as Power Grid Corporation of India, Damodar Valley Corporation, NTPC, IOCL, and Mittal Nippon Steel. This diversity is expected to enrich the learning experience and foster a collaborative environment among participants.

Closing Remarks

Dr. Indu Maheshwari, Principal Director of NPTI, delivered the closing remarks at the launch event. She emphasized the importance of such educational initiatives in shaping the future cadre of energy leaders in India. With the introduction of this Executive MBA program, IIM Nagpur is positioning itself as a pioneering institution dedicated to advancing clean, affordable, and reliable power solutions.

The launch of the Executive MBA in Energy Management at IIM Nagpur represents a critical step in addressing the educational needs of professionals in the energy sector.
