IIT-Kgp Plans Financial Aid for Students to Boost Global Internships

IIT-Kgp plans fin aid for students in bid to boost global internships

Kolkata, India – In a significant move to enhance its global presence, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) has announced plans to provide financial and institutional support to students pursuing international internships. This initiative, which will be launched during the institute’s platinum jubilee celebration, aims to assist at least 100 BTech, five-year dual degree, and MTech students in taking up international internships and participating in study abroad programs under the semester away initiative.

Overview of the Initiative

The initiative is set to commence in the summer of 2026 and is part of IIT-Kgp’s broader strategy to internationalize its educational offerings. Alongside the support for undergraduate and master’s students, the institute will also enhance financial assistance for PhD and postdoctoral scholars, enabling them to undertake long-term research stays at prestigious laboratories worldwide. This effort goes beyond merely attending international conferences, focusing instead on fostering substantial research collaborations.

Increasing Global Footprint

IIT-Kgp’s director, Suman Chakraborty, emphasized the importance of collaborative problem-solving in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. “The world’s most consequential problems will not be solved in silos or within borders. Through these platinum jubilee initiatives, IIT Kharagpur is positioning itself as a global convergence point, where the brightest minds come together to co-create solutions that matter to humanity,” he stated.

Financial Support for Students

According to the Dean of International Relations, Anandaroop Bhattacharya, the institute currently mandates internships for BTech, dual-degree, and MTech students. However, many students often decline international opportunities due to financial constraints. “It can be cost prohibitive for most of our students to go and stay a semester in Europe, the USA, Australia, or Singapore without financial aid,” Bhattacharya noted. The overwhelming response to the financial aid applications indicates a strong demand for such support among students.

Application Process

The application process for the financial aid is now open, and students will undergo a thorough screening to ensure that the support is allocated effectively. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the accessibility of international internships for students who might otherwise miss out on these valuable experiences.

Enhancing International Student Enrollment

Currently, IIT-Kgp hosts over 60 international students, with plans to increase this number by two to three times over the next two years. The institute is creating merit-based fellowships aimed at attracting outstanding global scholars. The Global Challenge Scheme and International Summer Research Programme will provide fully funded, long-duration research opportunities for top international students and researchers, allowing them to collaborate with IIT-Kgp teams on significant global issues.

Research Initiatives and Collaborations

In addition to student support, IIT-Kgp is introducing a Platinum Jubilee Bilateral Research Initiation Scheme. This program will offer Rs 50 lakh (approximately $60,000) in seed funding per project for jointly conceived research with premier global partners. The scheme will require mandatory co-investment from partner institutes and aims to achieve a tenfold increase in externally funded outcomes, alongside joint supervision, publications, and enhanced faculty and student mobility.

International Co-Teaching Scheme

As part of its internationalization efforts, IIT-Kgp will also launch an international co-teaching scheme. This initiative will bring leading academics, industry experts, and researchers to co-instruct undergraduate and postgraduate courses, enriching the academic experience for students and fostering a more global perspective within the curriculum.

Conclusion

The initiatives announced by IIT-Kgp represent a significant step towards enhancing the global competitiveness of its students and faculty. By providing financial aid for international internships and fostering collaborative research, the institute is not only enhancing its educational offerings but also positioning itself as a leader in global higher education.
