IIT Jammu organizes workshop cum competition on Basohli Paintings

On March 15, 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu hosted a workshop-cum-competition aimed at reviving the traditional art form of Basohli paintings. This initiative was part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) program, which seeks to promote awareness and encourage the preservation of cultural heritage in rural India.

Objective of the Event

The primary goal of the workshop was to educate participants about Basohli painting, a significant art form that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Jammu region. The event was organized by the Outreach Department of IIT Jammu, under the leadership of:

  • Prof. Meenakshi Rajeev, Dean (Outreach and Skill Development)

Participation

The workshop attracted around 80 participants from various educational institutions, including:

  • Government Degree College Kathua
  • MIER Jammu
  • BBA Department of the University of Jammu

  • SPMR College of Commerce Jammu

Youth from the adopted villages of Pangrain, Pangali, and Tanda also participated, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event.

Significance of Basohli Painting

Dr. Sameer Kumar Sarma Pachalla emphasized the importance of preserving traditional art forms. He noted the role of the UBA and the Ministry of Education, along with technical education institutions, in promoting rural and cultural heritage. Prof. Meenakshi Rajeev elaborated on the historical and artistic significance of Basohli painting, which is renowned for its bold colors, expressive style, and distinctive visual elements.

Workshop Sessions

The workshop featured sessions conducted by experienced practitioners of Basohli painting:

  • Amardeep Singh, an accomplished artist in the field
  • Subash Langeh, a noted regional artist

These resource persons shared valuable insights into the history, evolution, and distinctive features of Basohli painting. They provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques used in creating this unique style of artwork.

Practical Demonstrations

During the workshop, live demonstrations were conducted, where participants learned:

  • How to prepare colors
  • How to outline figures
  • How to paint traditional Basohli motifs

This hands-on approach allowed participants to apply the techniques they learned in real-time, enhancing their understanding of the art form.

Painting Competition

Following the workshop, a painting competition was organized where participants showcased their newly acquired skills. The competition was a platform for creativity and expression, allowing participants to apply the techniques they had learned during the workshop.

The results of the competition were as follows:

  • First Prize: Sunita from Government ITI Jammu
  • Second Prize: Gitanjali Phounsa from Dogra Degree College Samba
  • Third Prize: Kritika Sangotra from SMVDU Katra

All participants were awarded certificates of participation, recognizing their involvement and enthusiasm in the event.

Conclusion

The workshop-cum-competition on Basohli paintings at IIT Jammu not only served as a platform for artistic expression but also played a crucial role in preserving and promoting a significant aspect of the region’s cultural heritage.
