IIT-K's Technopark set to test defence equipment, unmanned aerial systems
Lucknow: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is making significant strides in the field of defence technology with the establishment of its research and technology park, known as Technopark@IITK. This facility is poised to become the largest in India dedicated to testing various defence equipment and unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
Investment and Development
The Technopark is being developed with a budget exceeding Rs 50 crore. It aims to provide a comprehensive testing environment for different types of unmanned aerial systems, facilitating trials that adhere to the stringent standards set by the US military. This initiative is expected to bolster the manufacturing capabilities within the Uttar Pradesh defence industrial corridor, a project supported by the Defence Ministry of India.
Background of the Project
The groundwork for this facility was laid four years ago when the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) partnered with IIT Kanpur to execute the defence corridor project. The goal is to reduce India’s dependency on foreign defence and aerospace technology by fostering local manufacturing.
Testing Capabilities
The Technopark will offer a wide range of testing options for private companies and individuals. Currently, there are 18 different types of tests available to assess the performance and reliability of drones and unmanned aerial systems. Some of these tests include:
- Humidity Test
- Thermal Shock Test
- Rain Test
- Power Supply Variation Test
- Navigation and Communication Test
- Destruction Capability Test
- Wide-Range Scanning Field Test
Unique Features of the Facility
According to Dr. Abhishek, a prominent figure in the department of aerospace engineering and the director of the UAS Testing Foundation, the Kanpur facility is unique in several aspects:
- It is the only facility in India that provides testing for electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for aerial systems.
- The facility includes a wind tunnel testing environment.
- It features advanced motion-capturing technology.
- A 1-kilometre-long runway is available for comprehensive testing.
Certification and Future Plans
In the coming weeks, the Technopark plans to secure certifications from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories. This accreditation will further enhance the facility’s capabilities and credibility in the defence sector.
Encouraging Private Investment
Sri Hari Pratap Shahi, the additional chief executive officer of UPEIDA and director of the UAS Testing Foundation, emphasized the importance of the Kanpur facility in attracting private manufacturers to establish operations in Uttar Pradesh. Land development is already underway at six strategic locations near expressways to facilitate this growth.
Recent Developments
The Technopark has recently gone live, and stakeholders have been informed about the various tests available for unmanned aerial systems. This proactive approach is expected to stimulate interest among private manufacturers looking to enter the defence sector.
Conclusion
The establishment of Technopark@IITK marks a significant advancement in India’s defence technology landscape. By providing state-of-the-art testing facilities and encouraging local manufacturing, IIT Kanpur is positioning itself as a leader in the development of unmanned aerial systems and other defence equipment. This initiative not only aims to enhance the capabilities of Indian manufacturers but also seeks to reduce reliance on foreign technology.
