University of Western Australia Joins Hands with IIM Mumbai and IIT/ISM Dhanbad

On December 10, 2025, the University of Western Australia (UWA) announced a significant collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai and the Indian Institute of Technology/Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad. This partnership aims to explore new opportunities in the mining sector, with a particular emphasis on logistics and sustainability.

Objectives of the Collaboration

According to UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma, the collaboration is focused on unlocking new opportunities in mining. The partnership will initially introduce approximately ten micro-credential online courses, which will be followed by the joint development of additional courses tailored to meet the specific needs of the sector.

Supporting India’s Clean Energy Transition

The programs developed through this collaboration are designed to support India’s transition to clean energy. They aim to:

  • Strengthen supply chain resilience
  • Elevate the country’s minerals workforce with global best practices
  • Create new pathways for joint research and executive education
  • Encourage industry-driven collaboration in areas such as mining, logistics, automation, geo-sciences, and sustainability

Expansion Plans of UWA in India

In addition to the collaboration with IIM Mumbai and IIT/ISM Dhanbad, UWA is planning to establish campuses in Mumbai and Chennai. These campuses are expected to open in 2026, with a target date around July-August.

Focus Areas of the New Campuses

The Mumbai campus will primarily focus on business and information technology, while the Chennai campus will emphasize technology and IT. This strategic expansion aims to enhance educational opportunities in India and foster a closer relationship between UWA and Indian institutions.

Collaborative Initiatives with Other Institutions

UWA is also collaborating with Centurion University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, to offer micro-credential courses aimed at reducing the skill gap in the mining sector. This initiative is part of a broader effort to align educational offerings with industry needs.

Introduction of a Nationwide Sports Immersion Program

In addition to its academic initiatives, UWA will introduce a nationwide Sports Immersion Program anchored by a state-of-the-art Sports Science Hub at its upcoming Chennai campus. This program is developed in partnership with Avid Sports and the Chennai Bulls and aims to bring Australian high-performance sport science expertise to India’s athletes, coaches, institutes, and sports communities.

Program Features

The Sports Immersion Program will include:

  • Immersion programs for athletes and coaches
  • Analytics training to improve performance
  • Biomechanics insights to enhance training methods
  • Pathways that integrate academic learning with real-world sports environments

Impact on India’s Sports Ecosystem

The program aims to transform India’s growing sports ecosystem and has already garnered attention from leading sports bodies committed to embedding scientific training at both elite and grassroots levels. By integrating advanced sports science into training regimens, the initiative seeks to elevate the performance standards of Indian athletes.

Conclusion

The collaboration between the University of Western Australia, IIM Mumbai, and IIT/ISM Dhanbad marks a significant step towards enhancing educational and professional opportunities in the mining sector and beyond. With a focus on sustainability and logistics, these initiatives are poised to contribute positively to India’s economic landscape while also fostering a new generation of skilled professionals.
