India Deep Tech Accelerator announced to help scale up IIT startups

New Delhi: The India Deep Tech Alliance (IDTA) and the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation have unveiled the India Deep Tech Accelerator, a 10-week program aimed at helping deep-tech startups affiliated with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) scale their operations internationally. This initiative is set to launch in April 2026 and will run through June 2026.

Overview of the Accelerator Program

The India Deep Tech Accelerator is designed to support India’s burgeoning deep tech startup ecosystem. The program is structured for a cohort of up to 15 startups, providing targeted workshops, coaching, and strategic connections with customers and investors. The accelerator will also feature showcases in India and the Bay Area for top-performing companies in June.

Collaboration with Leading IITs

This initiative is developed in collaboration with several prominent IIT innovation networks and incubators, including:

  • SINE at IIT Bombay
  • FITT at IIT Delhi
  • IIT Madras Research Park

These collaborations aim to create a structured and repeatable pathway for startups emerging from India’s premier technical institutions to access fundraising opportunities and leverage the Polsky Center’s extensive experience in venture creation and international market access.

Program Structure and Features

The accelerator program will consist of:

  • Targeted workshops focusing on various aspects of business development and scaling
  • Coaching sessions with industry experts
  • Connections to potential customers and investors
  • An India showcase and a Bay Area showcase for top-performing startups

These features are designed to facilitate near-term commercialization and financing milestones for IIT-affiliated startups in the United States and other global markets.

Funding and Support

IDTA will provide strategic guidance and support to founders throughout the program. Aroa Venture Partners has committed to investing up to $200,000 per startup for select companies that emerge from the accelerator. Additionally, several venture capital firms have agreed to contribute to the program by offering:

  • Workshops
  • Office hours for personalized mentoring
  • Potential investment support for cohort startups

The Need for the Accelerator

Despite the high-quality engineering and research output from India’s IITs, many deep-tech breakthroughs struggle to achieve scalable commercialization. Sriram Viswanathan, Founding Managing Partner at Celesta Capital and a member of the IDTA Executive Committee, emphasized this challenge, stating:

“India’s IITs produce world-class engineering and research, but too many deep-tech breakthroughs still struggle to cross the last mile into scalable commercialization.”

Goals of the Accelerator

The primary goals of the India Deep Tech Accelerator are:

  • To facilitate the growth of globally ambitious, IIT-affiliated startups
  • To enhance the commercialization of deep-tech innovations
  • To provide access to international markets and investor networks

By addressing these goals, the accelerator aims to bridge the gap between innovative research and successful business ventures.

Conclusion

The India Deep Tech Accelerator represents a significant step forward in supporting India’s deep tech startup ecosystem. By leveraging the strengths of IITs and the expertise of the Polsky Center, this initiative is poised to help startups overcome commercialization hurdles and achieve success in global markets.
