New research shows over 90% of gamers find playing with AI-powered NPCs to be "enjoyable and rewarding"
Recent research conducted by the University of Bristol in collaboration with the developer Meaning Machine has revealed that a significant majority of gamers enjoy interacting with AI-powered non-playable characters (NPCs). The study focused on the murder mystery game Dead Meat, where players engage in interrogations of various suspects.
Study Overview
The research involved 68 participants, comprising 31 male, 31 female, and 7 non-binary individuals. The findings indicated that 95% of participants found the gameplay experience enjoyable, while an impressive 97% reported that playing the game was rewarding. Additionally, 75% of players felt that Dead Meat allowed them to express themselves and make meaningful choices throughout the game.
Player Experiences
Participants expressed that the AI-powered NPCs in Dead Meat provided a unique opportunity for freedom of expression. One player remarked, “I did find it really rewarding, just like making my own questions up for once.” This sentiment highlights the positive impact of AI in enhancing player agency and creativity.
However, the researchers noted that this freedom can sometimes lead to feelings of overwhelm due to a lack of clear direction. One participant shared, “The freedom can be very exhilarating at first, and it feels immersive and cool. And it can also feel overwhelming.” This duality of experience underscores the complexity of player interactions with AI in gaming.
Implications of the Research
Dr. Richard Cole, the lead researcher on the project, emphasized the importance of grounding the discussion around AI in gaming in player experiences. “This research helps to ground what is otherwise quite an emotionally charged debate about AI in games,” he stated. “It does this by putting the player at the heart of the debate – asking what they feel about AI-powered experiences in practice, not just in theory.”
Thomas Keane, co-founder of Meaning Machine, added that while there is some resistance to AI that appears to detract from creativity, the use of AI to create new interactive experiences is viewed more positively. “Players kick back at AI that is taking away from creativity. But when AI is used to power totally new types of interactive experience, then it’s a very different story,” Keane explained.
Backlash Against AI in Gaming
Despite the positive findings from the study, there has been notable backlash against certain applications of AI in game development. For instance, the extraction shooter Arc Raiders received criticism for its use of AI to generate voice lines. Furthermore, BAFTA-winning actor Jane Perry has raised concerns about the potential threat AI poses to performers within the gaming industry.
Future Research
A comprehensive paper detailing the findings of this study is expected to be released at the end of the year. This paper will also include an analysis of player experiences with Meaning Machine’s more recent title, Blood Will Out, which is built on a more advanced version of the studio’s technology. Researchers collected a similar volume of data for this game, promising further insights into the evolving relationship between players and AI in gaming.
Conclusion
The research conducted by the University of Bristol and Meaning Machine highlights the growing acceptance and enjoyment of AI-powered NPCs among gamers. With over 90% of participants finding their experiences enjoyable and rewarding, it is clear that AI has the potential to enhance gameplay and foster creativity. However, as the industry continues to evolve, it is essential to address the concerns surrounding AI’s impact on creativity and the roles of human performers in gaming.
