IIT Jammu Director Highlights India’s Sovereign AI Potential
On February 19, 2026, at the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, Professor Manoj Singh Gaur, the Founding Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu, emphasized India’s capability to develop sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) models tailored to the country’s unique needs. His remarks came amidst a gathering of government policymakers, industry experts, and academics from around the world, aimed at advancing discussions on artificial intelligence.
Transformative Digital Infrastructure
Professor Gaur highlighted the significant impact of India’s digital public infrastructure initiatives, particularly citing the Aadhaar system and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). He stated, “This is an opportunity for us to replicate what we did as a digital public infrastructure in the form of Aadhaar and UPI, which nobody thought about, but at scale it happened on the ground.”
The Need for Homegrown AI Models
In his address, Gaur stressed the importance of creating AI models that are not only homegrown but also context-sensitive to Indian realities. He criticized the reliance on Western centralized frameworks, asserting that India has the potential to forge its own path in AI development.
“The opportunity here is that we can create our own models, which we will. The models which are contextual to India and they are not entirely dependent on the Western centralized model, but they are our own. They are sovereign models, sovereign technology for our use, data for public good or governance for public good,” he explained.
India’s Leadership in AI
During the summit, the Director of IIT Ropar also praised India’s emergence as a leader in the AI domain. He expressed optimism that the AI applications developed in India would benefit humanity as a whole. He referenced French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks on India’s achievements in the digital sector, affirming that India is poised to become a global leader in AI.
“India is going to lead the AI world. Whatever we are going to develop in India, we will deploy it in the whole world. We are working for the good of the whole of humanity,” he stated. Macron had previously acknowledged India’s digital transformation, which has garnered global recognition, particularly in the realm of digital transactions.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026
The India AI Impact Summit 2026, which commenced on February 16 and is set to continue until February 20, is being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event has brought together various stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and civil society representatives, to discuss the implications and future of artificial intelligence globally.
Significance of AI in India
As India continues to invest in AI technologies, the potential applications are vast. From improving public services to enhancing agricultural productivity, AI can play a crucial role in addressing some of the country’s most pressing challenges. The emphasis on sovereign AI models reflects a growing recognition of the need for technology that aligns with national priorities and cultural contexts.
Conclusion
In summary, the insights shared by Professor Gaur at the India AI Impact Summit underscore India’s potential to lead in the development of AI technologies that are not only innovative but also reflective of its unique societal needs. As the country forges ahead in this domain, the focus on sovereignty in AI will likely shape its future trajectory in the global technology landscape.
