PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone for IIT Bhilai Phase B

On September 27, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Phase B expansion of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai during a virtual ceremony. This significant milestone is part of a larger initiative that includes the inauguration of Phase B for seven other IITs across India, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and research capabilities in the country.

Details of the Phase B Expansion

The Phase B expansion project is backed by a substantial investment of Rs 2,257.55 crore, which was approved by the Government of India on May 29, 2025. Out of this total amount, Rs 1,092 crore is specifically allocated for campus construction. The expansion will add an impressive built-up area of 1,51,343 square meters to the existing campus.

Infrastructure Enhancements

The infrastructure development under Phase B will facilitate the establishment of:

  • New engineering and science departments
  • State-of-the-art laboratories
  • ICT-enabled lecture halls
  • Instrumentation and prototype facilities
  • Hostels and mess halls
  • An indoor sports complex
  • An open-air theatre
  • A canteen and various sports grounds, including cricket, football, and hockey
  • Tennis courts
  • Residential buildings
  • Expansion of the health centre and shopping complex

Establishment of the Research Park

A key feature of the Phase B expansion is the establishment of a Research Park, which will be the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh. With a budget of Rs 96 crore, the Research Park aims to foster academia-industry collaboration and create an ecosystem conducive to cutting-edge technology development. The completion of this project is anticipated by October 2028.

Background of IIT Bhilai

IIT Bhilai was established in 2016 and has already made significant strides in the field of education and research. The institute received Rs 1,090.17 crore from the Government of India for its Phase A construction, which resulted in a built-up area of 1,34,450 square meters. The Prime Minister dedicated the institute to the nation on February 20, 2024. Currently, IIT Bhilai has an enrollment of 1,525 students across various programs, including BTech, MTech, MSc, and PhD.

Impact on Technological Development

The completion of Phase B is expected to significantly enhance IIT Bhilai’s role in teaching, research, and collaborative projects, thereby contributing to the technological development of Chhattisgarh. The institute is currently involved in over 300 national and international projects valued at approximately Rs 185 crore and has filed 30 patents to date.

Innovative Projects and Initiatives

IIT Bhilai is also home to the IIT Bhilai Innovation and Technology Foundation (IBITF), which operates as a Section 8 company under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS) of the Department of Science and Technology. The foundation has been designated as a Category A Hub with a focus on “Technologies for the Financial Sector (FinTech) – Empowering Marginalized Communities through Technology-Driven Innovation.”

One of the notable projects undertaken by IIT Bhilai is the Vidya Samiksha Kendra, which serves as a centralized, real-time digital monitoring system for schools, teachers, students, and the distribution system across Chhattisgarh. This initiative has streamlined student and textbook data, successfully identifying and eliminating 10 lakh non-existent student records, which resulted in savings of Rs 40 crore on 60 lakh textbooks.

In addition, IIT Bhilai has initiated 54 tribal development projects across the country, with a total outlay of Rs 19 crore, utilizing advanced deep-tech solutions to address various community challenges.

Conclusion

The foundation stone for IIT Bhilai’s Phase B marks a significant advancement in educational infrastructure and research capabilities in Chhattisgarh. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, this expansion is set to play a vital role in the state’s technological development and academic excellence.
