IIT Madras Unveils India’s First ‘Language and Cognition Lab’ to Advance AI Research
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the country’s first dedicated ‘Language and Cognition Laboratory’ (LC-Lab), marking a significant step towards understanding India’s linguistic diversity through experimental linguistics and advanced technology. The lab was inaugurated on November 10, 2025, by IIT Madras Director, Professor V. Kamakoti, alongside the Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Rajesh Kumar, and Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Anindita Sahoo.
Purpose and Goals of the LC-Lab
The Language and Cognition Lab aims to explore how humans perceive, process, and produce language. It is designed to utilize various experimental tools, including eye-tracking and reaction-time experiments, to gather data on linguistic behavior. The long-term mission of the lab is to contribute to the development of human-centered, linguistically informed artificial intelligence (AI) systems, ensuring that India’s diverse languages are well represented in emerging technologies.
Interdisciplinary Approach
Professor Kamakoti emphasized the shift in linguistics towards data-driven and empirical methodologies. He noted the necessity for a facility that integrates linguistic theory with experimental and computational methods. The LC-Lab is established to bridge the gap between linguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience, and AI, contributing to the creation of socially relevant technologies.
Current and Future Projects
Currently, the LC-Lab is engaged in projects that investigate grammatical voice and copula constructions in various Indian languages. Future research initiatives will focus on studying dyslexia in Indian children, aiming to develop better educational interventions tailored to the needs of these children.
Technological Innovations
Dr. Anindita Sahoo highlighted the lab’s commitment to deepening interdisciplinary research by employing technologies that track behavioral patterns. The LC-Lab plans to use eye-tracking technology to test linguistic theories relevant to Indian languages. In the future, the lab intends to incorporate advanced neurocognitive tools such as Electroencephalography (EEG) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to broaden its research scope into cognition and computational modeling.
Collaborations and Support
The establishment of the LC-Lab has been made possible through the support of the IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation and Aspire Infolab, Hyderabad. The lab will work in close collaboration with the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras to further its research objectives.
Inauguration Symposium
The inauguration of the LC-Lab was preceded by a symposium titled ‘Language for Thought: Exploring Interdisciplinary Dimensions.’ This event featured experts from IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, the Indian Psychological Society (IPS), and the Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca in Italy. The panel discussions explored how language influences thought across various fields, including psychology, philosophy, public policy, and technology.
Significance of the Lab
The Language and Cognition Lab represents a significant advancement in the field of linguistics and AI research in India. By focusing on the unique linguistic characteristics of Indian languages, the lab aims to ensure that these languages are adequately represented in technological advancements. This initiative not only enhances the understanding of language and cognition but also supports the development of AI systems that are more inclusive and representative of India’s diverse population.
Conclusion
The establishment of the Language and Cognition Lab at IIT Madras is a landmark development in the intersection of linguistics, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. With its innovative approach and commitment to interdisciplinary research, the lab is poised to make significant contributions to the understanding of language and cognition in the context of India’s rich linguistic tapestry.
