This Simple Wheelchair Innovation Is Giving 7000 Indians With Disabilities Their Freedom Back

When Sundeep Talwar encountered a young boy named Mahesh, who lost his mobility in an accident, he felt compelled to do more than just express sympathy. This encounter led to the creation of NeoBolt, a motorised wheelchair that is now empowering over 7,000 individuals across India to move freely, earn a living, and live with dignity.

The Inspiration Behind NeoBolt

Sundeep Talwar, with over three decades of experience in corporate and development sectors, was deeply affected by the stories of individuals who had lost their freedom of movement due to accidents or disabilities. One particular story that resonated with him was that of Mahesh, the son of a fruit vendor in Mumbai. A tragic incident involving a falling tree left Mahesh with a crushed spine, rendering him unable to walk.

Sundeep recalls, “Most people said the best we could do was donate a wheelchair. But I could not accept that as the end of his story. A wheelchair might help him move, but it would also limit his chances for education and work.” This realization motivated him to seek a more effective solution.

Collaboration with NeoMotion

Determined to create a better alternative, Sundeep reached out to NeoMotion Assistive Solutions, an IIT Madras-incubated startup known for designing adaptive mobility devices. Although the engineers initially lacked a ready solution, Sundeep proposed an innovative idea: attaching a simple scooter to a wheelchair to provide it with power.

This concept led to the development of NeoBolt, a detachable motorised front attachment that transforms a manual wheelchair into a powered vehicle capable of navigating roads. What began as an effort to restore dignity to one individual quickly evolved into a nationwide mission aimed at providing mobility and self-reliance to thousands.

Addressing the Mobility Gap

According to the 2011 Census, over 2.68 crore people in India live with disabilities, many of whom face significant barriers that limit their access to education, employment, and public spaces. Recognizing this gap, Sundeep and his team set out to make mobility accessible and affordable for those in need.

Launching the Initiative

In 2021, under the Impact Guru Foundation (IGF), Sundeep launched a dedicated program to provide motorised mobility vehicles free of charge. The primary goal was to help individuals regain their confidence, earn a living, and fully participate in society.

IGF established a network of over 500 hospitals across India to identify individuals who could benefit from the NeoBolt. Through these hospitals, along with disability associations and local NGOs, the team began the process of screening and interviewing potential beneficiaries. Each selected applicant underwent a brief assessment to ensure they were ready to use and maintain the wheelchair-scooter safely.

Customisation and Funding

Every NeoBolt unit is customised to meet ISO standards and tailored to the user’s specific measurements. While NeoMotion managed the design and manufacturing, the Impact Guru Foundation coordinated donor relations, training, and delivery logistics. The entire project was funded through corporate and individual donations, ensuring complete transparency in the utilization of funds.

Impact and Reach

Three years into the initiative, the program has successfully reached over 7,000 individuals in various states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Each NeoBolt, valued between Rs 1 lakh and 1.2 lakh, has provided its user not just with mobility but also a renewed opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Innovative Design Features

For many wheelchair users, traversing even short distances outdoors can be a daunting task due to uneven roads and a lack of accessibility. The NeoBolt was designed to address these challenges.

Developed by NeoMotion in collaboration with the Impact Guru Foundation, the NeoBolt attaches to a standard manual wheelchair using a patented Quadra-Lock system, allowing for quick and easy installation. Once connected, it transforms the wheelchair into a powered vehicle suitable for city travel.
