IIT-K Drives Up Start-Up Ecosystem with Government Support

Lucknow: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) is playing a pivotal role in advancing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision to establish Uttar Pradesh (UP) as a major start-up ecosystem. This was highlighted by Professor Deepu Philip, who is in charge of IIT-K’s Startup Incubation & Innovation Centre (SIIC), during a session at the Viksit UP 2047 conference.

Emergence of IIT-K as a Start-Up Hub

According to Professor Philip, IIT-K is rapidly emerging as a strong start-up hub. “Currently, 521 start-ups at SIIC are proving their mettle and establishing themselves as powerful economic drivers for the country,” he stated. The institute is also working to position UP as a new capital of innovation.

Collaboration Between Government and IIT-K

The partnership between the government and IIT-K has created a platform where innovative ideas are directly connected to industry and market needs. Professor Philip emphasized that IIT-K is currently the only incubator center in the country that not only provides space and resources for start-ups but also acts as its own mentor.

Comprehensive Support for Start-Ups

At IIT-K, each start-up is assigned a faculty member as a mentor to help them grow. The start-ups benefit from a complete ecosystem that includes:

  • Technical guidance
  • Business modeling
  • Product development
  • Market access
  • Connections with investors

Alignment with National Initiatives

In line with the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, IIT-K is transforming ideas in various sectors into large businesses. The focus areas include:

  • Hardware
  • Electronics
  • Defence production
  • Agri-tech
  • Clean energy
  • Advanced manufacturing

Impact of Start-Ups During Critical Times

Professor Philip also noted that start-ups at IIT-K have played significant roles during critical times. For instance, drones manufactured by a start-up located on the IIT-K campus were utilized during ‘Operation Sindoor’. Additionally, these start-ups contributed significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrating their agility and importance in times of crisis.

Future Prospects for Start-Ups in UP

The future looks promising for start-ups in Uttar Pradesh, thanks to the supportive ecosystem fostered by IIT-K and the state government. The collaboration aims to not only enhance the start-up culture in UP but also to create a sustainable model for innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.

Conclusion

The efforts of IIT-K in collaboration with the government are setting a strong foundation for a vibrant start-up ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh. With the continued support and resources provided through initiatives like SIIC, the state is well on its way to becoming a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in India.
