AI Push Spurs 1K Seats at Elite Gujarat Institutes

Ahmedabad: In a significant move to bolster education in artificial intelligence (AI), several premier educational institutions in Gujarat are expanding their course offerings. With the increasing demand for AI expertise in various industries, institutes such as IIT Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn), MICA, IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A), and Dhirubhai Ambani University (DAU) are introducing new programs that will create over 1,000 seats dedicated to AI-related studies.

New Course Offerings

IIT Gandhinagar has recently announced three residential short-term courses focused on AI. These courses will cover topics such as agentic AI, which deals with autonomous systems, and AI-powered software engineering. MICA has also launched programs in Generative AI, prompt engineering, and branding across sectors in the AI landscape.

IIM Ahmedabad is offering a blended MBA in Business Analytics and AI, while DAU is set to introduce two BTech programs and one MSc program specializing in AI for the upcoming academic year. Experts predict that by the start of the next academic year, Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will collectively offer more than 1,000 seats in both full-time and short-term AI courses.

The Importance of AI Education

As AI technologies become increasingly prevalent in the post-ChatGPT era, educational institutions are recognizing the need to prepare the next generation of professionals. Many institutes that previously offered only components of AI and machine learning are now launching comprehensive bachelor’s and master’s degree programs focused primarily on AI.

Prof. Anindya Chakrabarti, chairperson of the BPGP (BA & AI) at IIM-A, emphasized that the course is essential in today’s job market, where businesses are increasingly integrating AI for analytics across various domains, including marketing, finance, and human resources. Prof. Bharat Bhasker, the director of IIM-A, echoed this sentiment, stating that the new courses are a direct response to industry demand and the rapid changes brought about by AI.

Electives and Specializations

IIM Ahmedabad is also offering a range of electives related to AI, including:

  • AI, Business and Society
  • AI and Machine Learning in Financial Services
  • Generative AI and Marketing
  • Managerial Machine Learning with Python

Prof. Rajat Moona, director of IIT-Gn, highlighted the transformative impact of AI on business and daily life. He stated that future engineers must be well-versed in AI technologies to effectively implement and utilize them. IIT-Gn plans to enroll its first batch of students in the MTech (AI) program in 2026, with a competitive admission process already underway.

Course Structure and Content

The MTech program at IIT-Gn will include modules on:

  • Natural Language Processing
  • Computer Vision
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Theoretical Machine Learning

All students will be required to complete core courses in machine learning, deep learning, and the ethics of AI, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the technology.

New Programs at Dhirubhai Ambani University

Siddharth Swaminarayan, the Registrar of DAU, announced the launch of three new programs: BTech in Computer Science & AI, BTech in Electronics & AI, and an integrated MSc in Data Science and AI, which will collectively offer 300 seats starting in the 2026-27 academic year. These programs will also feature a variety of AI-focused elective courses, including:

  • Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning
  • Quantum Machine Learning
  • Natural Language Processing

Industry Demand and Technological Advancements

Experts have noted a significant shift in how educational institutions approach AI. Initially hesitant about AI-generated assignments, instructors are now embracing the technology. The rapid advancements in related fields such as quantum computing, biotechnology, and human-computer interfaces are driving the demand for skilled professionals in AI.

Dr. Himanshu Soni, director of the School of Technology at Nirma University, pointed out that AI and machine learning are reshaping every major industry, necessitating that academia keeps pace with these changes. Nirma University has already launched a BTech program in Computer Science with a specialization in AI-ML, which began in 2024-25 with 60 seats. Additionally, a new MTech program in Electronics and Instrumentation with a specialization in Robotics and AI will be introduced next academic year, offering 18 seats.

Broader Perspectives on AI

While technical aspects of AI are crucial, MICA’s director and CEO, Jaya Deshmukh, emphasized the importance of understanding AI through a social science lens. She advocates for viewing AI through the “5Cs”: creativity, culture, communication, commerce, and community. Prof. Santosh Kumar Patra from MICA added that students should be educated as thoughtful architects of AI integration rather than passive adopters, understanding how algorithms influence cultural narratives and reshape commerce.

Legal Education and AI

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is also adapting to the changing landscape, offering electives such as “New-Age Technologies and Law.” Prof. Girish R, head of academic affairs at GNLU, explained that students are trained to understand the regulatory frameworks surrounding AI, including accountability and ownership of AI-generated work. The elective also addresses issues like cybercrime linked to AI, including deepfakes and AI’s role in legal practice.

Conclusion

The expansion of AI-related educational programs in Gujarat’s elite institutes reflects a growing recognition of the importance of AI in various sectors. As institutions prepare to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge, the future workforce will be better prepared to navigate and contribute to an increasingly AI-driven world.
