Boosting Innovation in Next-Gen Telecom and Cybersecurity

In a significant move aimed at enhancing India’s technological landscape, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-GN) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE). Signed on November 12, 2025, this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is set to promote cutting-edge research, innovation, and development of indigenous products in the telecom and cybersecurity domains.

Objectives of the Centre of Excellence

The primary goal of the CoE initiative is to accelerate India’s leadership in telecommunications and technology. By synergizing C-DOT’s expertise with the academic excellence of IIT-GN, the CoE aims to create a dynamic and collaborative environment. Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in advancing next-generation telecom technologies and fostering the development of intellectual property.

Key Areas of Focus

The CoE will concentrate on several critical areas, including:

  • Mobile Communications
  • Cyber Security
  • Quantum Communication
  • Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Advanced Telecom Applications

Professor Rajat Moona, Director of IIT-GN, highlighted the necessity of self-reliance in digital and communication technologies, along with cybersecurity, for the security, growth, and development of the country. The CoE is envisioned as a hub for both fundamental and applied research, aiming to excel in these domains.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

The mandate of the Centre is to foster collaboration among students, faculty, researchers from IIT Gandhinagar, and C-DOT researchers. This collaboration is expected to enrich research work and develop practical solutions to various challenges in the telecom and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sectors.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem

In addition to research, the CoE will support incubation, mentoring, and collaboration with startups, industries, and academia. This approach aims to create a robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. The CoE will provide training, capacity building, and skilling programs aligned with national telecom, semiconductor, and digital transformation missions, thereby creating an industry-ready workforce.

Future Prospects

Both C-DOT and IIT-GN are committed to collaborating on scholarly publications, patent filings, joint seminars, and the development of final products. This partnership is expected to play a crucial role in positioning India as a global leader in technological innovation, resonating with the vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) and “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).

Conclusion

The establishment of the Centre of Excellence between C-DOT and IIT-GN marks a pivotal step towards enhancing India’s capabilities in the fields of telecommunications and cybersecurity. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and a skilled workforce, this initiative is set to contribute significantly to the nation’s technological advancement and self-reliance.
