C-DOT and IIT Roorkee Launch Centre of Excellence to Drive Telecom Innovation

In a significant advancement for India’s telecommunications landscape, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier research and development organization of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee). This collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a pivotal moment in the enhancement of indigenous telecom innovation.

Objective of the Collaboration

The newly established Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee aims to drive research and development in next-generation communication technologies. This initiative is expected to strengthen academia-industry collaboration while accelerating India’s journey towards digital self-reliance and sovereignty in telecommunications.

Inauguration of the Centre of Excellence

The formal inauguration of the CoE was attended by key figures including Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT. The event highlighted the integration of academic rigor with industry-grade research and development expertise, setting the stage for a transformative partnership.

Focus Areas of the Centre of Excellence

The CoE is envisioned as a hub for innovation, concentrating on advanced communication technologies that are critical for India’s digital future. The focus areas include:

  • 5G and 6G communication systems
  • RF-Sub-THz integrated circuits
  • Millimeter-wave and beamforming antennas with integrated chips
  • Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication
  • Quantum communication technologies
  • Cybersecurity frameworks and threat detection systems
  • AI-driven wireless communication and network optimization
  • Energy-efficient communication architectures
  • Sensors and intelligent communication hardware

Strengthening Academia-Industry Synergy

The partnership between C-DOT and IIT Roorkee is a significant step towards aligning academic research with national strategic priorities. The CoE will serve as a platform for:

  • Joint research projects and technology co-development
  • Start-up incubation and industry mentoring
  • Intellectual property creation
  • Specialized workshops, skill-building programs, and expert lectures
  • Infrastructure and resource sharing between academia and industry

This initiative will provide students, researchers, and early-stage start-ups access to advanced facilities, mentorship from leading scientists, and opportunities to develop real-world solutions aligned with India’s telecom roadmap.

Driving Self-Reliance Through Indigenous Solutions

During the MoU ceremony, Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay emphasized the transformative potential of this collaboration. He stated that the CoE will be instrumental in designing secure, indigenous telecom technologies for a developed India (Viksit Bharat), thereby reducing reliance on imported systems. Dr. Upadhyay remarked, “This collaboration brings together the expertise of India’s leading academic institute and the R&D strengths of C-DOT to accelerate indigenous telecom innovation.”

C-DOT’s Contributions to Telecom Innovation

Dr. Upadhyay also outlined C-DOT’s existing contributions to the telecom sector, which include:

  • Indigenous 4G/5G systems
  • TRINETRA cybersecurity solutions
  • Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC)
  • Disaster management platforms
  • AI-enabled telecom applications such as Sanchar Saathi
  • Fraud-detection and mission-critical communication solutions (MCX)

IIT Roorkee’s Legacy in Communication Engineering

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, describing it as an important milestone in advancing India’s next-generation telecom capabilities. He highlighted IIT Roorkee’s strong legacy in:

  • Communication engineering
  • Semiconductor design
  • Wireless technologies
  • Cybersecurity
  • Embedded electronics systems

Prof. Pant stated, “The CoE will offer a transformative platform for our faculty, researchers, and students to co-develop technologies of strategic national importance.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

As part of the inauguration events, Dr. Upadhyay delivered the sixth Prof. A.K. Kamal Memorial Lecture, titled “Building Indigenous Communication Technologies for Viksit Bharat.” His presentation covered:

  • India’s evolving telecom landscape
  • The Bharat 6G Vision and emerging opportunities
  • The global telecom value chain and standards development
  • The role of indigenous R&D
  • Strategic opportunities for India to position itself as a global technology leader

The lecture underscored the necessity for collaboration between C-DOT’s innovations and India’s academic ecosystem to achieve next-generation breakthroughs.

A Major Leap Toward Global Telecom Leadership

The collaboration between C-DOT and IIT Roorkee signifies a critical advancement in fortifying India’s telecom sovereignty. By fostering research and development excellence, nurturing local talent, and catalyzing innovation, the CoE is poised to transition India from being a technology consumer to a technology creator in vital communication sectors.

This partnership aligns closely with national priorities such as Digital India, the Bharat 6G Vision, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, ensuring that India remains competitive and influential in the global telecom landscape for years to come.
