C-DOT Signs MoU With IIT Roorkee To Boost 5G/6G And Emerging Tech Research

New Delhi: The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the research and development arm of the Department of Telecommunications, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), one of India’s premier engineering institutions. This collaboration aims to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee, focusing on advanced communication technologies.

Objectives of the MoU

The primary goal of this MoU is to enhance research, innovation, and skill development in cutting-edge communication technologies. The CoE will concentrate on several key areas:

  • Wireless communication
  • Quantum technologies
  • Cybersecurity
  • AI-based applications

Strengthening Collaboration

This initiative aims to strengthen the collaboration between academia and industry by leveraging IIT Roorkee’s academic strengths and C-DOT’s technological expertise. The CoE is designed to facilitate students, researchers, and start-ups in developing new solutions that support India’s vision of technological self-reliance.

Research Focus Areas

The CoE will drive joint research in several emerging areas, including:

  • 5G and 6G technologies
  • RF and Sub-THz circuits
  • Sensors
  • Millimetre-wave antennas
  • Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication
  • Data-driven wireless technologies
  • Energy-efficient systems

Inauguration of the Centre of Excellence

The MoU was signed in the presence of key figures, including Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, along with faculty members and senior officials from both organizations. Following the signing ceremony, the new Centre of Excellence was formally inaugurated.

Support for Start-ups and Innovation

The CoE will utilize C-DOT’s experience in developing indigenous telecom solutions to support start-ups, foster intellectual property creation, and organize workshops, training sessions, and academic-industry programs. This initiative is expected to significantly bolster India’s position in global telecom innovation and contribute to national technological growth.

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay’s Lecture

As part of the sixth Prof. A.K. Kamal Memorial Lecture Series, Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay delivered a lecture titled “Building Indigenous Communication Technologies for Viksit Bharat.” In his address, he discussed India’s telecom ecosystem, the Bharat 6G Vision, the telecom value chain, standards, and opportunities for the country.

C-DOT’s Achievements

Dr. Upadhyay highlighted C-DOT’s accomplishments in various domains, including:

  • 4G and 5G technologies
  • Cybersecurity initiatives (TRINETRA)
  • Quantum communication
  • Disaster management solutions
  • AI-enabled telecom applications such as Sanchar Saathi and fraud detection systems
  • Mission-critical communication

Vision for the Future

Dr. Upadhyay emphasized that this partnership combines IIT Roorkee’s academic excellence with C-DOT’s R&D strengths, accelerating India’s telecom innovation. He expressed confidence that this collaboration would empower India to develop its own technologies in 5G, 6G, AI, and secure communication systems.

Prof. K.K. Pant’s Remarks

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, described the partnership as a significant milestone. He noted that IIT Roorkee’s robust background in communication engineering, semiconductors, and wireless systems would greatly support C-DOT’s mission. He added that the CoE would provide faculty, researchers, and students with a major platform to create technologies of national importance and contribute to India’s long-term technological leadership.

Conclusion

The collaboration between C-DOT and IIT Roorkee marks a pivotal step towards enhancing India’s capabilities in the field of advanced communication technologies. By establishing a Centre of Excellence, both organizations aim to foster innovation, support start-ups, and contribute to the nation’s goal of technological self-reliance.
