First in India: IIT-Kgp to Roll Out Master’s Course in Indian Knowledge System
Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) is set to launch a master’s program (MS) in Indian Knowledge System (IKS), marking the first of its kind in the country. This innovative course will commence in June 2026 as part of the Platinum Jubilee Year celebrations of India’s oldest IIT.
Course Overview
The master’s program aims to explore and integrate India’s rich mathematical and scientific traditions, linguistic theories, holistic wellness, and leadership values. By blending classical Indic wisdom with contemporary academic rigor and modern scientific perspectives, the program seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of Indian knowledge systems.
Program Details
According to the director of IIT-Kgp, Suman Chakraborty, “India’s traditional knowledge systems were once deeply scientific, systematic, and future-oriented. This new master’s program integrates that rich legacy with AI-driven analysis and modern research methodologies.” He emphasized that the course will create a unique academic convergence, where ancient insights meet modern analytical power.
Intake Capacity
The initial intake capacity for the program will be limited to 15 students, ensuring a focused and personalized educational experience.
Significance of the Program
Arijit De, chairperson of the Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems (CoE-IKS) at IIT-Kgp, stated that the introduction of this dedicated master’s program is a natural extension of the institute’s commitment to integrating Indian perspectives into higher education and research. He noted, “It addresses the growing national need to integrate Indian perspectives into higher education and research. It is unique and a first-of-a-kind course in Bharat.”
Curriculum Highlights
The curriculum will include various modules that cover a wide range of topics:
- Sanskrit Appreciation Studies: This module will focus on developing foundational linguistic competence and literary sensitivity through phonology and modern applications.
- Holistic Wellbeing: Drawing on Yoga, Vedānta, and Ayurveda, this module will address concepts related to health as an integrated mind-body-consciousness system, emphasizing balance, positive emotions, and emotional intelligence.
- Awakened Leadership with Indian Values: This module will emphasize self-governance, ethical leadership, sustainability, and compassion, inspired by Indian philosophical texts such as the Kauṭilīya Arthaśāstra and the Bhagavad Gita.
- Mathematical Skills and Astronomy: Students will learn mathematical skills rooted in classical Indian philosophy, situating these traditions within the context of contemporary AI modeling.
- Communication Theories: The program will combine Pāṇinian grammar and modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to enhance effective communication.
Experiential Learning Opportunities
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the program will feature an Indic Knowledge Innovations Lab. This lab will provide hands-on experiential learning opportunities through:
- Speech production studies
- Astro-mathematical observations
- Language comprehension exercises
- NLP and AI experiments
- Neuro-phenomenological research
The lab aims to integrate traditional Indic concepts with contemporary scientific methodologies, fostering interdisciplinary understanding, innovation, and entrepreneurship skills rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage.
Compliance with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, IIT-Kgp has also launched an elective offering micro-specialization for undergraduate students. This initiative encourages students to pursue Bharatiya thoughts, values, and ethics, allowing them to choose relevant electives starting from the January semester.
Conclusion
The launch of the master’s program in Indian Knowledge Systems at IIT-Kgp represents a significant step in integrating traditional Indian knowledge with modern academic frameworks. It aims to equip students with a unique blend of ancient wisdom and contemporary skills, fostering a new generation of leaders and innovators.
