From ABC to AI: IIT Experts May Shape Computer Science Syllabus for Karnataka Public Schools

Bengaluru: The Karnataka state school education department is planning to collaborate with leading Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), specifically IIT Madras or IIT Bombay, to develop a comprehensive computer science curriculum for government-run Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). This initiative aims to introduce computer science as a subject for students starting in class 1 in the upcoming 2026-27 academic year.

Incorporation of Artificial Intelligence

As part of this new curriculum, the department intends to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the syllabus from class 3 onward. This move is designed to ensure that students are not only familiar with basic computer science concepts but are also exposed to advanced technologies like AI at an early age.

Current State of Computer Science Education

At present, there are no specialized teachers or textbooks for computer science in government schools. In many cases, computers are available only if there are volunteer teachers or those appointed by NGOs, donors, or the School Development Monitoring Committee (SDMC). This lack of resources has hindered the effective teaching of computer science in these institutions.

Addressing Teacher Shortages

To address the shortage of qualified computer science teachers, the education department plans to establish a dedicated cadre for computer science instruction within KPS. The qualifications for these teachers will align with the standards set by the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society. Prospective teachers will be required to hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), or BSc with computer science, or an equivalent qualification.

Language Proficiency Requirements

In addition to educational qualifications, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Kannada. This can be achieved by having studied Kannada at various educational levels, including postgraduate, bachelor’s, pre-university, SSLC, or by obtaining a diploma in Kannada or passing a Kannada certificate course offered by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board or Kannada Sahitya Parishath in Bangalore.

Future Discussions with IITs

The department of state education, research, and training plans to engage in discussions with IIT Bombay next week and will also hold meetings with IIT Madras later. Rashmi Mahesh, the principal secretary of the department of school education and literacy, expressed pride in the initiative, stating, “We will finalize one of them based on these discussions. It is a matter of pride that we will have the best team in the country preparing the curriculum content for our schools.”

Transforming Karnataka Public Schools

This initiative is part of a broader goal to transform KPS into model schools equipped with all necessary facilities under one roof. Currently, there are around 309 KPS offering classes from LKG/UKG to II PU. The government plans to upgrade an additional 800 Kannada medium and 100 Urdu medium schools to KPS status. The concept was originally launched in the 2018-19 academic year with 176 schools across the state.

Projected Enrollment Growth

The average enrollment per KPS was approximately 785 students in 2021, and this number is projected to increase to about 819 students by the 2025-26 academic year. The introduction of a robust computer science curriculum is expected to attract more students and enhance the overall quality of education in these schools.

Pre-Primary Education Expansion

In a separate initiative, the department has announced plans to introduce pre-primary sections in government schools. A circular dated November 14 outlined the list of schools that will implement these sections in 4,056 government schools for the 2026-27 academic year. This includes 1,699 magnet schools, 126 PM Sree schools, and 1,126 schools under the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB).

Qualifications for Pre-Primary Teachers

The department has also specified the qualifications required for teachers in pre-primary sections. A candidate must have completed the II PU with a minimum of 50 percent marks and possess a diploma in Nursery Teacher Education, Preschool Teacher Education, Diploma in Early Childhood Education, or a B.Ed (Nursery). In cases where qualified teachers are unavailable, schools may hire individuals who have scored at least 50 percent in PUC II and have completed a two-year D.Ed training program from NCTE-recognized institutions.

Teacher and Helper Salaries

Each pre-primary class is expected to have one teacher and one helper. Teachers will receive a salary of Rs 12,000 per month, while helpers will be paid Rs 6,250 per month, for a duration of 10 months. This initiative aims to ensure that children receive quality education from an early age, laying a strong foundation for their future learning.

Conclusion

The collaboration between the Karnataka education department and leading IITs marks a significant step towards enhancing computer science education in public schools. By integrating AI and establishing a qualified teaching cadre, the initiative aims to equip students with essential skills for the future. As the educational landscape evolves, such initiatives will play a crucial role in preparing the next generation for a technology-driven world.
