From Boardroom to Campus: How Corporate Leadership Reimagined IIM Mumbai

In the 1950s, when India first envisioned modern management institutions, Mumbai was poised to be the heart of this initiative. Recognized as the country’s commercial and financial hub, expert committees, including the Harvard Advisory Group, identified Mumbai as an ideal location for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM). However, due to administrative decisions and policy priorities of that era, the establishment of an IIM in Mumbai did not materialize. This gap was partially addressed in 1963 with the founding of the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), aimed at supporting India’s industrial modernization and cultivating specialized managerial and technical talent.

An Aspiration Revisited

The long-awaited transformation of NITIE into IIM Mumbai gained momentum in 2023 under the leadership of Shashi Kiran Shetty, the Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIM Mumbai and the Founder and Chairman of Allcargo Group. Shetty’s vision aligned institutional efforts, government processes, and long-term strategies to elevate NITIE’s status. He emphasized that this journey was built upon the collective efforts of many individuals who had contributed to the institute’s legacy. “It is the collective efforts and aspirations of IIM Mumbai that have been instrumental in elevating this institute to the status of a distinguished IIM,” he stated.

Path to IIM Status

Upon assuming chairmanship, Shetty made securing IIM status a central institutional goal. This transition required comprehensive reforms, including:

  • Restructuring governance systems
  • Transitioning from the Society Act to the IIM Act framework
  • Updating administrative structures
  • Strengthening financial and academic oversight

The process involved rigorous evaluations by expert committees and required approvals from various central ministries and the Union Cabinet. Alongside governance changes, the institute reimagined its financial model, moving away from a historical government grant of approximately ₹70 crore. Shetty encouraged the development of diversified revenue streams, which included:

  • Expanding degree programs
  • Enhancing online learning
  • Scaling corporate training
  • Increasing consulting activities
  • Building philanthropic partnerships

This strategic shift not only made the institution more globally aligned but also financially resilient, enabling landmark contributions such as ₹28 crore in infrastructure support from Motilal Oswal and significant alumni- and industry-funded initiatives for the AI Centre.

Significance of the Transition

For decades, NITIE had been synonymous with excellence in operations, supply chain, and industrial engineering through its flagship programs—the Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE) and the Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM). However, as IIMs gained autonomy under the 2017 IIM Act and began awarding globally recognized MBAs, NITIE faced challenges regarding the equivalency of its diplomas. Despite its strong academic reputation, the diploma format placed graduates at a disadvantage in terms of global mobility and credential recognition.

The transition to IIM Mumbai resolved this disparity, granting the institute the stature, academic freedom, and global positioning necessary to enhance its strengths in critical areas shaping India’s growth, such as logistics, digital operations, manufacturing systems, and financial technology.

A New Chapter for Mumbai

With the elevation to IIM Mumbai, the city finally received the IIM it had long awaited. This development is seen as a significant milestone for a city characterized by enterprise and ambition. The emergence of IIM Mumbai enriches the management education landscape and reinforces the city’s identity as a national hub for business, finance, and innovation.

Early Gains and National Recognition

Remarkably, within just a year of its transformation, IIM Mumbai climbed to 6th place in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Management Rankings, a significant improvement from its 29th position in 2019. This rise is particularly impressive given the record number of applicants—over 10,000 across various categories—indicating heightened competition among institutions. IIM Mumbai has maintained this ranking for two consecutive years, showcasing the academic excellence of the institution and the commitment of its faculty, students, alumni, and staff.

The ranking serves as an affirmation of the collective effort invested in navigating the institution’s transformation. With Prof. Manoj K. Tiwari, the Director of IIM Mumbai, at the helm, the institution is preparing to embark on its next phase of growth.

Reimagining Academic Direction

IIM Mumbai has expanded its academic portfolio while retaining NITIE’s traditional strengths. Data science has been integrated into the MBA curriculum earlier than at many peer institutions. The updated curriculum now includes:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Generative AI
  • Digital operations
  • Algorithmic decision-making
  • Supply chain analytics

Some courses are co-taught by international experts, including Prof. David Simchi-Levi from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Additionally, IIM Mumbai has introduced programs aligned with emerging national priorities, such as:

  • A specialized maritime and logistics program reflecting India’s port and shipping ambitions
  • A manufacturing management program developed in collaboration with Tata Electronics, supporting India’s semiconductor ecosystem
  • Finance offerings designed with the National Stock Exchange, responding to rising participation in capital markets
  • Digital commerce programs that prepare students for India’s fast-expanding online economy

Furthermore, IIM Mumbai has established the AIC–NIFIE Incubation Centre under the Atal Innovation Mission, providing a robust launchpad for early-stage startups.

Note: The transformation of NITIE into IIM Mumbai not only fulfills a long-standing aspiration for the city but also positions the institution to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of management education in India.
