How India’s Young IIMs are Steadily Carving Out Their Own Path
In recent years, several new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have emerged as significant players in the field of management education. Institutions such as IIM Udaipur, IIM Amritsar, and IIM Tiruchirappalli are establishing themselves as innovative hubs of research and learning, unburdened by the legacies of older institutions.
IIM Udaipur: A Hub of Research and Innovation
Founded in 2011, IIM Udaipur has rapidly gained recognition for its research capabilities. The campus, located at the foothills of the Aravallis in Rajasthan, has become a vibrant center for students from across the country. According to Prof. Ashok Banerjee, the director of IIM Udaipur, the absence of legacy issues allows the institution to embrace innovation more freely. He states, “For newer IIMs, the resistance to change is less. New IIMs can do many things more innovatively.”
Despite not receiving government funding since 2018, IIM Udaipur has built its corpus through self-generated income. “The government said you are on your own after the first five to six years,” Banerjee explained. This has led the institute to finance future expansions through loans.
Research Excellence
IIM Udaipur’s research output is impressive, even outperforming some of the older IIMs like Ahmedabad and Bangalore in terms of per capita research output. With 60 faculty members, the institute has focused on establishing specialized research centers. Prof. Saurabh Gupta, who has taught in Europe, noted that the work environment at IIM Udaipur is comparable to that of top European universities.
Healthcare Initiatives
The Centre for Healthcare at IIM Udaipur is an example of its commitment to addressing real-world problems. The center collaborates with practitioners, academicians, and policymakers to tackle issues in the healthcare sector. For instance, a project on cervical cancer screening revealed that less than 2% of Indian women are screened, despite a WHO target of 70%. The center’s research emphasized the importance of effective messaging to overcome stigma associated with cervical cancer.
IIM Amritsar: Embracing Experimentation
Established in 2015, IIM Amritsar has recently moved to a new facility on the Jalandhar highway. Director Prof. Samir Kumar Srivastava highlighted the financial challenges faced by the institute, stating, “There was no government support even during initial years.” However, he emphasized the institute’s willingness to experiment and innovate.
Integrated Management Program
IIM Amritsar is set to launch an integrated program in management, allowing students to enroll after Class 12. This five-year program will offer a bachelor’s degree in quantitative finance and economics, followed by an MBA. According to Assistant Professor Chetan Chitre, this program is designed for students interested in finance and economics, particularly those from a physics-chemistry-maths background.
IIM Tiruchirappalli: Personalized Learning Environment
IIM Tiruchirappalli, established in 2011, moved to its expansive 175-acre campus in 2017. The institute has developed a strong identity, offering a supportive and personalized learning environment. Abhishek Kumar Totawar, an associate professor, stated, “Students enjoy a more personalized and supportive learning environment.”
Corporate Partnerships and Sustainability Initiatives
The institute has formed partnerships with corporations such as Renault Nissan and Hyundai for executive programs. Additionally, IIM Tiruchirappalli collaborates with public sector organizations like the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency to contribute to research initiatives.
In a significant move towards sustainability, IIM Tiruchirappalli aims to achieve net-zero emissions by partnering with the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) to set up a 2MW solar power plant on campus.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Interest in entrepreneurship among students at these newer IIMs is on the rise. Aditi Shah, a 2020 alumna of IIM Tiruchirappalli, launched her venture, Dedhfoot, after experimenting with business ideas during her time on campus. Her experience highlights the entrepreneurial spirit fostered in these institutions, where students are encouraged to explore and innovate.
Conclusion
The emergence of younger IIMs like Udaipur, Amritsar, and Tiruchirappalli marks a significant shift in India’s management education landscape. These institutions are not only embracing innovation and research but are also addressing real-world challenges through specialized programs and partnerships. Their ability to adapt and experiment positions them uniquely in a competitive field, paving the way for a new generation of leaders in business and management.
