IIT Alum at Yale Counters NRI ‘Hard Life’ Narrative

In a time when social media is rife with narratives about the struggles faced by Indians living abroad, Aman Rai, an alumnus of IIT Delhi, has taken to LinkedIn to share a contrasting perspective. Now pursuing an MBA at Yale University, Rai highlights what he describes as “massive life upgrades” since relocating from Delhi to the United States.

Challenging the Narrative

Rai’s post comes at a time when many Indians abroad are vocalizing their challenges, from managing daily chores to adapting to new climates. However, in his six months since moving to the US, Rai has found a different reality. He expressed his desire to present an alternate viewpoint, emphasizing the positive changes he has experienced.

Infrastructure and Safety Improvements

One of the most notable changes Rai observed is in infrastructure and pedestrian safety. He remarked, “There are sidewalks without random manholes. I couldn’t imagine running in the second half of the day without the fear of being hit by a vehicle in Bangalore. Last month, almost every day, I ran in the second half of the day.”

This newfound safety extends to driving conditions as well. Rai noted that his wife had avoided driving in India for five years due to chaotic road conditions, but felt comfortable enough to start driving within just two months of arriving in the US.

Weather and Air Quality

Contrary to expectations, Rai found the weather in the US to be surprisingly pleasant. “I came here in the fall. People warned me about ‘winter gloom.’ I feel the opposite. I purchased one decent jacket (for $40), and that was sufficient. After it snows, it feels like a wonderland,” he shared.

He also emphasized the significant difference in air quality, stating, “Coming from Delhi, breathing here feels like breathing an elixir,” highlighting the stark contrast with the pollution levels in the Indian capital.

Shifts in Lifestyle Choices

Rai mentioned that he does not miss the quick-delivery services like Blinkit or Zomato, as he has developed a preference for cooking and ordering groceries weekly through apps. He has found it easy to maintain a high-protein diet with “clean, high-quality food.”

Despite residing in what he described as a “small” city, Rai praised the accessibility of nature, noting, “I have a lake, a hill, and a beach within driving distance. The outdoors are actually accessible.”

Professional Opportunities

On the professional front, Rai has experienced rapid growth. He stated, “If you’re willing to do the work, doors open remarkably fast. I’m already working with a $1B VC fund in a small capacity.” This reflects the opportunities available in the US for those who are proactive and willing to seize them.

Mental Well-being

Beyond material comforts, Rai highlighted the mental peace he has found in the US. He noted, “There is a level of mental peace that comes with the lack of constant honking and ambient noise.” This aspect of his experience underscores the importance of a conducive environment for mental well-being.

A Positive Mindset

Concluding his post, Rai shared an important insight: “Generally, if you do not have a victim mentality, you’ll appreciate what this place has to offer.” His perspective encourages others to focus on the positives rather than dwelling on challenges.

Social Media Reactions

Rai’s post garnered a variety of reactions on social media. One user resonated with his experience, stating, “I’ve noticed people are generous with their time for coffee chats, career advice, and mentoring. Love the paying it forward culture.” Another user acknowledged the positives while also noting that experiences can vary greatly depending on personal circumstances.

A third commenter remarked, “This is a refreshing take. Every place has trade-offs, but mindset decides what you amplify. The quiet dignity of systems working, clean air, predictable rules, and access to opportunity compound in ways people underestimate. Glad you shared the other side — it deserves more airtime.”

Conclusion

Aman Rai’s experiences reflect a significant shift in lifestyle and perspective after moving to the United States. His insights challenge the prevailing narrative of hardship faced by many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and highlight the opportunities and benefits available in a new environment. While individual experiences may vary, Rai’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of mindset and the potential for positive change.
