IIT (BHU) Chosen to Set Up Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen

On December 10, 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Green Hydrogen at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) in Varanasi and the Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) in Gorakhpur. This initiative is part of the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy–2024, aimed at enhancing research, technology development, and clean mobility solutions in the state.

Objectives of the Centre of Excellence

The CoE is designed to promote various aspects of green hydrogen, including:

  • Research and technology development
  • Capacity building
  • Industrial applications of green hydrogen

One of the key objectives is to operate a hydrogen-fuelled train between Varanasi and Gorakhpur, in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways. This project will facilitate extensive testing of:

  • Hydrogen storage
  • Transportation
  • Operational performance
  • End-use applications

Green Mobility Solutions

In addition to the hydrogen-fuelled train, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) plans to introduce green hydrogen-powered buses on the same route. This initiative positions the region as a pioneer in clean mobility solutions, which are essential for reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

Infrastructure Development

Approximately 50% of the project infrastructure will be developed at MMMUT in Gorakhpur. This development is expected to strengthen the technological ecosystem in eastern Uttar Pradesh, fostering innovation and collaboration among various stakeholders.

Leadership and Coordination

The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) will serve as the lead institution for the Centre of Excellence. Prof. Amit Patra, the director of IIT-BHU, expressed pride in the institution’s role, stating, “It is a matter of great pride that IIT (BHU) has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Centre of Excellence under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy–2024.”

He emphasized that this initiative will open new horizons for clean energy, green mobility, and cutting-edge research across the state. Prof. Patra also thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), and the state government for their support.

Incubation and Startup Ecosystem

Dr. Preetam Singh, an associate professor in the Department of Ceramic Engineering, will coordinate the CoE. He highlighted that the Centre will establish a dedicated incubation centre to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in green hydrogen and clean energy technologies. The plan includes:

  • Incubating ten startups per year
  • Supporting a total of 50 startups over five years
  • Providing technical guidance, mentoring, and access to research infrastructure

This initiative aims to shape a robust startup ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh’s clean energy domain, encouraging young entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in sustainable technologies.

Significance of Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources, making it a clean alternative to fossil fuels. It has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and can be utilized in various sectors, including transportation, power generation, and industrial processes. The establishment of the CoE at IIT-BHU and MMMUT is a crucial step towards advancing research and development in this promising field.

Future Prospects

The CoE in Green Hydrogen is expected to pave the way for numerous advancements in clean energy technologies. The collaboration between IIT-BHU and MMMUT will not only enhance academic research but also foster partnerships with industry stakeholders, government agencies, and startups. This multi-faceted approach will ensure that the benefits of green hydrogen technology are realized across various sectors, contributing to a sustainable future for Uttar Pradesh and beyond.

Conclusion

The establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen at IIT (BHU) marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards sustainable energy solutions. With a focus on research, innovation, and clean mobility, this initiative is set to transform the energy landscape in Uttar Pradesh, making it a leader in green technology.
