IIT-Guwahati Supporting Assam’s AI Initiative Through Teacher Training and Textbook Preparation

In a significant move to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the educational framework of Assam, IIT-Guwahati has taken a proactive role in training teachers and preparing relevant textbooks. This initiative marks a pivotal step in the state’s efforts to modernize its school curriculum and equip educators with the necessary skills to teach this emerging subject.

Introduction of AI in Assam’s School Curriculum

As part of its educational reforms, the Assam government has introduced AI as a subject for Class 11 students in government schools. Recognizing the novelty of this subject, the state has prioritized teacher training to ensure effective delivery of the curriculum. According to Prof. Devendra Jalihal, the Director of IIT-Guwahati, the first batch of 126 teachers from various parts of Assam has already undergone training at the institute.

Training Programs at IIT-Guwahati

The training is conducted at the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS&AI) at IIT-Guwahati. This institute offers specialized academic programs focused on AI and data science. The training sessions have also included teachers from Bhutan, showcasing the institute’s commitment to regional educational development.

Future Plans for Teacher Training

Prof. Jalihal mentioned that future training batches will include faculty members from other northeastern states, thereby expanding the reach and impact of the program. The initiative aims to create a robust network of trained educators who can effectively teach AI across the region.

Textbook Development for AI Curriculum

In addition to teacher training, IIT-Guwahati has collaborated with faculty members to develop textbooks for the AI curriculum in Assam’s government schools. The textbooks are co-authored by:

  • Prof. Shymanta M Hazarika, Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Assistant Prof. Debanga Raj Neog, MFSDS&AI
  • Sadiq Hussain, Dibrugarh University

The Class 11 textbook has already been released, with the Class 12 book expected to follow soon. Currently, the textbooks are available in English, with plans underway to translate them into local languages, including Bodo, to enhance accessibility for students.

Phased Introduction of AI as an Elective Subject

The introduction of AI in Assam’s schools is being implemented in phases. Initially offered as an elective subject, the curriculum aims to gradually integrate AI concepts into the broader educational framework. This phased approach allows for adjustments based on feedback and the evolving needs of students and educators.

Online Bachelor of Science Program in Data Science and AI

IIT-Guwahati has also launched an on-campus undergraduate program in Data Science and AI, alongside an online Bachelor of Science program offered by MFSDS&AI. This online program, which began in 2023, is designed to be flexible, allowing students to exit the program at various stages.

Enrollment Growth and Mentorship Initiatives

The online program has seen impressive growth, with initial enrollment numbers reaching:

  • 700 students in the first batch
  • 1,000 students in the second batch
  • 1,400 students in the third batch

With this trajectory, enrollment is projected to reach 5,000 students within the next five years. However, the institute has noted that very few students from the northeastern states have enrolled in the online program. To address this, IIT-Guwahati has proposed a mentorship initiative to assist students from villages, small towns, and government schools in meeting eligibility criteria.

Mentoring Program Success

Through discussions with Assam’s Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, the institute identified 500 students for mentoring. Approximately 250 students from 28 districts participated in a month-long program at IIT-Guwahati, receiving guidance and support. Following this mentoring, 80 students qualified for the online course through a test, with 72 receiving admission offers. The institute has committed to supporting these students with full fee waivers.

Commitment to AI Education

Prof. Jalihal emphasized IIT-Guwahati’s commitment to promoting education in Data Science and AI, especially as these technologies become increasingly prevalent in everyday life. By investing in teacher training and curriculum development, the institute aims to foster a generation of students well-versed in AI, preparing them for future challenges and opportunities in a technology-driven world.

Conclusion

IIT-Guwahati’s initiatives in training teachers and developing textbooks for AI education in Assam represent a significant step towards modernizing the state’s educational landscape. By equipping educators with the necessary skills and resources, the institute is playing a crucial role in preparing students for a future where AI will be an integral part of various industries.
