IIT-K Partners with Pernod Ricard to Drive Innovation in Plastic Circularity
Kanpur: In a significant step towards advancing sustainable innovation, the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur has partnered with the Pernod Ricard India Foundation to launch Advaya – The Plastic Circularity Innovation Launchpad. This initiative, part of the Pernod Ricard India Foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, aims to accelerate the development of technology-driven solutions that promote circularity in the plastics sector.
Collaboration for Sustainability
Earlier in the day, a team from the Pernod Ricard India Foundation met with IIT Kanpur’s director, Professor Manindra Agrawal, to discuss the institute’s broader vision for sustainability and innovation-driven collaborations. The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both institutions to foster research-led entrepreneurship that addresses pressing environmental challenges.
Launch Event Highlights
The launch event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers, to explore the future of circular plastics in India. Advaya is set to provide incubation and grant support of INR 20 lakhs to ten startups. This funding will enable the creation of scalable and commercially viable technologies for plastic waste management, recycling, and value recovery.
Key Remarks from Officials
Municipal Commissioner Arpit Upadhyay attended the event as the chief guest. He emphasized the importance of advanced technological solutions, stating, “In the near future, effective waste segregation and the conversion of waste into resources will emerge in India through scalable public-private collaborations. Initiatives like Advaya will play a major role in promoting circularity.”
Gagandeep Singh Sethi, Senior Vice President of Integrated Operations & Sustainability at Pernod Ricard India, remarked, “The Advaya platform unites industry and academia to reimagine the lifecycle of plastics and build a circular economy. Through our partnership with SIIC–IIT Kanpur, we are empowering entrepreneurs to drive sustainable innovation and create ‘Good Times from a Good Place.’”
Professor Deepu Philip, Director of Innovation & Incubation at SIIC IIT Kanpur, stated, “Advaya represents IIT Kanpur’s continued focus on fostering innovation with societal relevance. The initiative seeks to convert the challenge of plastic waste into an opportunity for sustainable industrial growth.”
Importance of Plastic Circularity
The concept of plastic circularity is crucial in addressing the global plastic crisis. Traditional linear models of production and consumption lead to significant waste and environmental degradation. By promoting circularity, the aim is to create a system where plastic materials are reused, recycled, and repurposed, thus minimizing waste and reducing the need for new plastic production.
Future Outlook
As India grapples with increasing plastic waste, initiatives like Advaya are essential in paving the way for sustainable practices. The collaboration between IIT Kanpur and Pernod Ricard India Foundation is a promising step towards developing innovative solutions that can significantly impact the environment and promote a circular economy.
Conclusion
The partnership between IIT Kanpur and Pernod Ricard India Foundation not only highlights the importance of collaboration between academia and industry but also signifies a commitment to sustainable development. With the launch of Advaya, there is hope for a future where plastic waste is effectively managed, and innovative solutions emerge to tackle one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.
