Chennai: In a significant advancement for India’s maritime infrastructure, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have successfully developed and deployed the country’s first Indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) for ports. This initiative marks a crucial step in reducing dependency on imported technology and bolstering the indigenisation of critical systems.

The Indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System has been developed by the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) in alignment with the requirements set forth by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoSPW), Government of India. Implementation and Deployment

The Indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System has been successfully implemented at the Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) in Kerala, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, 2025. Following this successful deployment, discussions are ongoing with two additional ports on the Western Coast of India to implement the system.

K Murali, Head of NTCPWC at IIT Madras, elaborated on the importance of an Indigenous system, stating, “An Indigenous system eliminates the risk of a leak of strategically important data of the movement of vessels. Further, it also enables fast tracking of innovations to provide the most appropriate solutions to various challenges and reduces other operational and financial risks associated with dealing with private vendors.”

The Indigenous VTMS is scalable, meaning it can accommodate deployment in more ports with enhanced capabilities. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the system is designed to adapt to new challenges and technologies, ensuring that India remains at the forefront of maritime safety and efficiency.
