IIT Madras-Led Initiative Trains Youth Volunteers to Lead India’s Road Safety Movement

In a significant effort to address the rising number of road accidents in India, the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at IIT Madras, in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), has launched the Sadak Suraksha Mitra (SSM) initiative. This program aims to empower youth volunteers to become grassroots leaders in road safety, thereby supporting district administrations in their efforts to reduce accidents and save lives.

Overview of the Sadak Suraksha Mitra Initiative

The Sadak Suraksha Mitra initiative is designed to transform young citizens into proactive participants in road safety governance. The first physical training workshop for SSM volunteers took place from March 16 to March 18, 2026, in Faridabad. During this three-day intensive program, 53 youth volunteers from five states and 13 districts were trained, marking a pivotal step towards establishing a nationwide, youth-driven road safety movement.

Core Objectives of the Training Program

The training program aimed to equip participants with the skills necessary to assist District Road Safety Committees (DRSCs) in three critical areas:

  • First Response to Road Accidents: Volunteers learned how to provide emergency assistance at accident sites.
  • Road Safety Audits: Participants were trained to identify high-risk zones and assess road safety conditions.
  • Administrative Support: Volunteers were prepared to support district-level safety initiatives and collaborate with local authorities.

Government’s Emphasis on Prevention

During the valedictory session in New Delhi, Shri V. Umashankar, Secretary of MoRTH, emphasized the importance of prioritizing accident prevention over post-accident responses. He stated, “Every road accident has an underlying cause. If we identify and address it, we can prevent recurrence.” This message underscores the initiative’s focus on a proactive, data-driven approach to road safety.

Highlighting the Urgency of Road Safety

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by alarming statistics regarding road safety in India:

  • Approximately 45% of road accident fatalities involve two-wheelers, primarily due to the non-use of helmets.
  • About 20% of fatalities involve pedestrians, indicating significant gaps in infrastructure and safety design.

Shri Umashankar called for intensified awareness campaigns, particularly focusing on helmet usage and improvements in pedestrian infrastructure, including crossings and traffic-calming measures.

Targeted Action in High-Risk Districts

The government has identified 100 high-accident districts for targeted interventions. Volunteers are encouraged to:

  • Analyze local accident patterns to understand specific challenges.
  • Identify root causes of accidents in their areas.
  • Advocate for solutions with district authorities to enhance road safety.

Shri Umashankar likened the role of these volunteers to that of “soldiers serving the nation,” emphasizing that saving even a single life is a significant achievement.

Training Designed for Real-World Impact

The workshop combined theoretical knowledge with practical insights, preparing volunteers to:

  • Respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Conduct on-ground safety assessments.
  • Engage communities in behavioral change campaigns to promote road safety.

Officials believe that this initiative will create a multiplier effect, as trained volunteers mobilize communities and raise awareness about road safety at the grassroots level.

Building a Nationwide Road Safety Movement

The program concluded with a valedictory session at MoRTH, attended by senior officials including Shri Mahmood Ahmed (Additional Secretary) and Shri R.P. Shukla (Director). Participants were encouraged to return to their districts as “road safety champions,” driving local initiatives and contributing to national goals.

Towards Safer Roads in India

With India recording one of the highest numbers of road accident fatalities globally, initiatives like Sadak Suraksha Mitra represent a strategic shift towards citizen-led safety interventions. By empowering youth with the necessary skills, data, and institutional support, the government aims to establish a sustainable, community-driven framework for reducing road accidents and saving lives.
