IIT-Kgp Introduces Recharge Zones to Alleviate Placement Stress
Kolkata: In a groundbreaking initiative, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has established “recharge zones” to assist students in managing the mental stress associated with the competitive placement process. The placement season commenced on Monday, and these zones aim to provide a supportive environment for job aspirants.
Understanding the Need for Recharge Zones
The decision to create these zones comes in light of the increasing mental health concerns among students. Over the past nine months, the institute has tragically witnessed five student suicides. An external committee, tasked with investigating these incidents, found that more than 80% of students reported feeling intense pressure to secure desirable internships and job placements.
Director’s Perspective
IIT Kharagpur’s director, Suman Chakraborty, emphasized the importance of supporting students during this challenging time. “The placement process is inherently rigorous,” he stated. “As we mark our 75th year, we are prioritizing institutional support mechanisms. These zones are intended to provide a necessary pause for students, ensuring they rejuvenate themselves and approach opportunities with clarity and balance.”
Features of the Recharge Zones
Located in the Nalanda Complex, the recharge zones are operational 24/7 and have been thoughtfully designed to be judgment-free spaces where students can unwind, reset, and reconnect with themselves. Each zone offers a variety of self-guided activities rooted in wellness practices. Below are the key features of these zones:
1. Creative Expression Corner
This area encourages students to express their emotions through art and reflective writing. Activities include:
- Doodling and coloring to visualize emotions.
- Writing letters of encouragement to their future selves, which serves as a therapeutic exercise.
2. Mindful Relaxation Zone
In this zone, students can engage in quiet reflection and mindful practices while enjoying calming music. They can also access guided meditation sessions by scanning QR codes available in the area.
3. Grounding & Movement Zone
This area is designed to alleviate physical and emotional stress. It includes:
- Stress-relief tools such as fidget toys, stress balls, and bubble sheets.
- Low-effort activity tables featuring puzzles and games like Jenga.
- Table tennis boards for physical activity.
Support from the Career Development Centre
The initiative aligns with the broader goals of the institute’s Career Development Centre, led by Professor Sanjay Kumar Gupta. The centre aims to provide holistic support to students, recognizing the importance of mental well-being during the placement process.
Student Testimonials
A fourth-year student participating in placement interviews shared their thoughts on the new initiative. “The placement process is stressful, and many students face breakdowns and panic attacks. Previously, there was no space where we could calm ourselves. These zones, with their cozy seating, plants, and creative materials, offer a comforting environment for students,” they explained.
Conclusion
The introduction of recharge zones at IIT Kharagpur marks a significant step towards addressing the mental health challenges faced by students during the placement season. By providing a supportive and nurturing environment, the institute aims to help students manage stress and approach their career opportunities with a refreshed mindset.
Note: The establishment of recharge zones is a pioneering effort in Indian higher education, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of mental health support in academic institutions.
