Meet Saurav Kumar: An Inspiration in Sports and Innovation
Saurav Kumar, a recent graduate of IIT Roorkee, has made remarkable strides in the world of para sports and innovation, despite facing a lower-limb disability. His journey from personal loss to becoming a national para swimming star is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of support from an inclusive educational environment.
A Journey Begins at IIT Roorkee
Saurav’s story began on the IIT Roorkee campus in 2024 when he was pursuing a degree in Engineering Physics. During his time there, he played a pivotal role in organizing a para sports event that featured renowned Paralympians such as Md. Shams Aalam and Pramod Bhagat. Their inspiring journeys ignited a spark in Saurav, prompting him to ask himself a life-changing question: “Why not try?”
Overcoming Personal Loss
At the same time, Saurav was grappling with the profound loss of his mother, who had succumbed to cancer. This personal tragedy could have deterred many, but for Saurav, it became a catalyst for change. Despite having no prior experience in swimming and facing initial hesitation from coaches regarding his disability, he decided to embark on this new journey.
Rapid Success in Para Swimming
What followed was nothing short of astonishing. Within just three months of dedicated training, Saurav clinched two silver medals at the state level and secured a spot in the top 10 nationally at the 2024 National Para Swimming Championships. His achievements did not stop there; in 2025, he earned four gold medals across various state and district competitions, culminating in a commendable fourth-place finish in the 100m butterfly event at the national level.
Preparing for Future Competitions
Today, Saurav has the stamina to swim up to 5 kilometers in a single session. He is now gearing up for prestigious competitions such as Khelo India, Asian-level events, and the World Para Swimming Championship Series scheduled for March 12, 2026, in Italy. His journey has been fully supported by IIT Roorkee, which has played a crucial role in his development as an athlete.
Acknowledgment from IIT Roorkee
Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, the Director of IIT Roorkee, expressed pride in Saurav’s accomplishments. At IIT Roorkee, we are proud to support his journey and remain committed to creating an inclusive ecosystem where every student, irrespective of ability, can thrive and chase their dreams.”
Beyond the Pool: Innovation and Leadership
Saurav’s talents extend beyond the realm of sports. In 2025, he became the Institute Snooker Champion and co-founded IRIS Eco-Tech, a deep-tech startup incubated at IIT Roorkee. His innovative work in prosthetic leg technology earned him the Professional Development and Innovation Award, as well as the Hari Krishna Mittal Leadership Award.
Inspiring Others
Reflecting on his journey, Saurav shared, “You don’t need a perfect body to chase your dreams; what you need is belief, determination, and the courage to begin. If I can do it, so can every student who dares to dream, no matter the challenges. I carry with me the strength of my family, my mentors, and my Institute, and I hope my journey inspires others never to give up.”
A Campus Committed to Inclusion
IIT Roorkee’s leadership has consistently highlighted Saurav’s journey as a reflection of its commitment to inclusivity. The institute proudly hosts over 150 students with disabilities and, with the support of the Dean of Students’ Welfare office, provides training access, travel support, and sponsorship to ensure equal opportunities for all students.
