2 IIT-Bombay students on Mahuli fort trek survive near-fatal fall, rescued

NAVI MUMBAI: In a dramatic incident that underscores the risks of trekking in challenging terrains, two students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay were rescued after a near-fatal fall during their trek to Mahuli Fort in Thane district.

The Incident

On Tuesday, April 3, 2026, the two students, identified as U. Yenampalle, a 21-year-old from Hyderabad, and Shobhon Muluswami, also 21, from Chennai, embarked on their trek from Asangaon via the Hanuman Darvaja route. They decided to undertake the trek without a guide, which is often discouraged due to the challenging nature of the terrain.

Details of the Fall

While nearing the summit of Mahuli Fort, the duo missed the designated path and inadvertently climbed a steep and slippery rock face. This misstep led to both students losing their balance and slipping nearly 25 feet down the rocky slope. Fortunately, they managed to grab hold of a lone tree, preventing them from falling approximately 600 feet into a deep valley below.

Emergency Response

Realizing their precarious situation, Yenampalle and Muluswami shared their GPS location with authorities and called for help. The local police and rescue teams were alerted around 10:30 AM, prompting a swift response.

Rescue Operation

A 12-member team from the Jeevrakshak rescue group launched an operation at approximately 12:30 PM. They arrived at the scene by 2 PM. Rescuer Bhushan Vishe described the operation, stating, “We asked them to remain calm, provided them with water and biscuits, and used rappelling techniques to bring them up safely despite the loose rocks.” The rescue team anchored ropes to a nearby tree and carefully pulled the students to safety.

Duration and Challenges of the Rescue

The rescue operation was challenging and lasted nearly eight hours, concluding around 7:30 PM. The rescuers faced difficulties due to the loose rocks and the steep terrain, but their training and experience allowed them to successfully navigate these obstacles.

Injuries and Aftermath

Both students sustained multiple injuries during the fall, but they are reported to be in stable condition. Medical assistance was provided once they were brought to safety. Authorities later emphasized the importance of trekking with a guide, especially in high-risk zones like Mahuli Fort.

Advice for Trekkers

  • Always trek with a guide, especially in unfamiliar areas.
  • Stay on marked paths to avoid dangerous terrain.
  • Carry essential supplies, including water, food, and a first-aid kit.
  • Inform someone about your trekking plans and expected return time.
  • Use GPS devices or apps to track your location and stay oriented.

Conclusion

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with trekking in rugged terrains. While the thrill of adventure can be enticing, safety should always be the top priority. The successful rescue of the two IIT-Bombay students highlights the importance of preparedness and the value of rescue teams in emergency situations.

Note: Always prioritize safety while engaging in outdoor activities and be aware of the risks involved.
