The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay celebrated its 67th Foundation Day on March 10, 2026. This significant event honored the contributions of its faculty members and alumni who have excelled in their respective fields. The Foundation Day serves as a reminder of the institute’s commitment to academic excellence, pioneering research, and global contributions in science, technology, and innovation.

Event Highlights

The Foundation Day event was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Balram Bhargava, a distinguished figure in the field of medicine and research. He is a Padma Shri awardee and has held various prestigious positions, including the Immediate Past Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the former Chief of the Cardiothoracic Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi.

The ceremony commenced with a welcome address by the Director of IIT Bombay, Prof. Shireesh Kedare. In his speech, he reflected on the institute’s remarkable journey over the past six decades and emphasized the importance of adapting teaching and research methodologies to meet contemporary challenges. He urged faculty and students alike to strive for excellence and relevance in their work.

Keynote Address by Dr. Balram Bhargava

In his keynote address, Dr. Bhargava highlighted India’s journey as it approaches its 80th year of independence. He spoke about how science and innovation can transform national challenges into opportunities. He cited examples such as the Green and White Revolutions, advancements in space exploration, healthcare innovations, and developments in digital technologies as indicators of progress achieved through determination and commitment.

Dr. Bhargava also acknowledged the vital role institutions like IIT Bombay play in fostering innovation and excellence, noting how alumni continue to represent the country proudly on global platforms.

Awards and Recognitions

The Foundation Day celebration featured the presentation of prestigious Institute Awards, recognizing excellence in teaching, research, and contributions to society. The awards presented included:

  • IIT Bombay Prof. S.C. Sahasrabudhe Lifetime Achievement Award – Awarded to Prof. Rajiv Dusane from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science for his exemplary contributions as a teacher, researcher, and administrator.
  • Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences (2025) – Conferred on Prof. K.G. Suresh from the Department of Physics for his outstanding work in Magnetism in Intermetallics, Spintronics, Magnetic Skyrmions, and Topological Materials.
  • Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences (2025) – Awarded to Prof. R.S. Jangid from the Department of Civil Engineering for his significant contributions to Seismic Base Isolation, Earthquake-Resistant Design, and Stochastic Earthquake Analysis.
