IIT Delhi’s Smart Mosquito-Repellent Detergents To Protect Against Malaria, Dengue

New Delhi: In response to the increasing prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have developed an innovative mosquito-repellent detergent. This advancement aims to enhance protection against these diseases, which pose significant health risks globally.

The Challenge of Mosquito-Borne Diseases

With the rise in mosquito-borne diseases, the need for effective preventive measures has never been more critical. Traditional protective options include:

  • Liquids
  • Coils
  • Lotions
  • Creams
  • Roll-ons
  • Sprays
  • Patches

However, these conventional methods often have limitations. For example, topical formulations like creams and lotions may lose their efficacy over time, increasing the risk of mosquito bites and the associated diseases.

Introducing Smart Mosquito-Repellent Detergents

The new mosquito-repellent detergents developed by IIT Delhi researchers are available in both powder and liquid forms. These detergents maintain comparable wash-care properties while providing an innovative solution to mosquito repellent needs.

Research Insights

According to Prof. Javed Nabibaksha Sheikh from the Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering at IIT Delhi, “We have developed smart detergents to protect people from dangerous mosquito-borne diseases. The products have been tested in a commercial laboratory and have proven effective at repelling mosquitoes.”

Testing Methodology

The effectiveness of these detergents was evaluated using a method known as the “hand-in-cage” test. In this test, volunteers inserted their hands, covered with fabrics washed with the new detergents, into a box containing starved mosquitoes. The researchers then counted the number of mosquitoes landing on the fabric. The results showed a significant reduction in mosquito landings on fabrics washed with these detergents.

How It Works

The innovative mosquito-repellent properties of these detergents are attributed to their active components, which interact with the fibers during the washing process. This interaction makes the fabrics less attractive to mosquitoes. As mosquitoes detect their environment through smell and taste, the active components in the detergent target these sensory pathways, effectively deterring mosquitoes from landing on the textiles.

Durability and Regeneration of Properties

One of the key advantages of these smart detergents is their ability to regenerate mosquito-repellent properties with each wash. Since textiles are frequently laundered, the mosquito-repellent effects are maintained over time, ensuring both efficiency and durability in protecting against bites.

Commercialization and Future Prospects

A patent for the mosquito-repellent detergents has already been filed, and the commercialization of these products is expected soon. This development represents a significant step forward in public health initiatives aimed at combating mosquito-borne diseases.

Conclusion

The introduction of smart mosquito-repellent detergents by IIT Delhi marks a promising advancement in the fight against malaria, dengue, and other mosquito-borne diseases. By integrating mosquito-repellent properties into everyday laundry products, these detergents offer a practical and effective solution to protect individuals and communities from the health risks associated with mosquito bites.
