IIT Guwahati Boosts Rural Innovation with RuTAG 2.0 Meet

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati recently hosted the Second Annual Review Meeting of the Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) 2.0 projects. The event took place in the presence of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, Professor A.K. Sood, who served as the chief guest.

Organized under the Office of the PSA, Government of India, the two-day event drew participation from notable figures including Dr. Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary; Dr. Rakesh Kaur, Adviser/Scientist ‘G’; and Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati. Faculty members and researchers from IIT Guwahati also attended, contributing to discussions aimed at enhancing rural innovation.

Objectives of RuTAG 2.0

During the opening address, Professor Jalihal emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders working on technologies that directly impact society. He stated, “Your collective efforts have helped us gain the experience needed to scale these initiatives for greater impact. I look forward to learning from the innovative work being presented over the next two days.”

The primary aim of the review meeting was to assess the progress, impact, and scalability of the RuTAG 2.0 projects being implemented across various regions of India.   • Standardization and Validation: PSA Professor A.K. Sood stressed the need for standardization, validation, and wider deployment of rural technologies. He noted, “The Rural Science and Technology Partnership Centre envisions serving 25 to 40 surrounding villages by integrating innovations such as soil health management and satellite-based information.”
  • Exhibition of Innovations: The event featured an exhibition showcasing grassroots innovators and RuTAG Centres that presented technologies aimed at solving challenges faced by the rural sector.
  • Focus on Commercialization: Dr. Parvinder Maini highlighted the necessity for innovation-led development in rural India, stating, “The rural sector is the backbone of our economy. Under RuTAG 2.0, we must focus on commercialization, market readiness, and widespread deployment of solutions.”

New Research Centres Inaugurated

A significant highlight of the event was the inauguration of two new interdisciplinary research centres under the School of Agro and Rural Technology (SART). These centres are:

  • Centre for Innovation in Agri & Aqua Voltaics (CIAAV): This centre aims to foster advancements in sustainable agriculture and aquaculture.
  • Integrated Facility for Wellness-Product Innovation (IFWPI): This facility focuses on the development of wellness products, contributing to health and livelihood opportunities.

Collaboration Among Institutions

RuTAG Centres from various prestigious institutions, including IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras, SKUAST-Kashmir, and ICAR-NAARM, presented their work during the meeting. Their presentations covered a wide range of topics, including grassroots innovation, rural entrepreneurship, and technology deployment.

Demonstrations and Future Discussions

Day 1 of the event included a drone demonstration showcasing its applications in rural settings. The second day is expected to continue with policy discussions, review sessions, and stakeholder interactions involving representatives from academia, industry, and government.
