IIT-Guwahati Leads AI Education Push in Assam
In a significant development for education in Assam, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has taken a pioneering role in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the school curriculum. The institute has successfully trained its first batch of school teachers, marking a crucial step towards enhancing AI literacy among students in the region.
Introduction of AI in Assam’s Curriculum
According to the director of IIT-Guwahati, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, AI has been officially introduced as a subject in Class 11 in Assam government schools. This initiative aims to equip students with essential skills in AI and data science, preparing them for a technology-driven future. Given that this is a new subject for many teachers, comprehensive training was required to ensure effective teaching methods.
Teacher Training Program
The first batch of 126 teachers from across Assam was trained at the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS&AI) at IIT-Guwahati. This training program is a vital component of the initiative, as it ensures that educators are well-equipped to deliver the new curriculum effectively.
Prof. Jalihal mentioned that teachers from Bhutan have also undergone training at the institute, with plans to include faculty from other northeastern states in future training sessions. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the overall quality of education in the region.
Development of AI Textbooks
In conjunction with the teacher training, faculty members from IIT-Guwahati have co-authored textbooks for the AI curriculum. The Class 11 textbook has already been released, while a Class 12 textbook is expected to be published soon. The authors of these textbooks include:
- Prof. Shymanta M Hazarika – Mechanical Engineering Department
- Assistant Prof. Debanga Raj Neog – MFSDS&AI
- Sadiq Hussain – Dibrugarh University
Currently, the textbooks are available in English, with plans to translate them into local languages, including Bodo, to make the content more accessible to students across Assam.
Phased Introduction of AI Education
The introduction of AI as an elective subject is being implemented in phases. The initial focus is on Class 11, with the aim of gradually expanding the program to include additional classes and subjects in the future. This phased approach allows for a smooth transition and adaptation to the new curriculum.
Enrollment and Mentoring Initiatives
As part of its commitment to promoting AI education, IIT-Guwahati has launched an online Bachelor of Science program in Data Science and AI. This program was initiated in 2023 and has seen a steady increase in enrollment, with:
- 700 students in the first batch
- 1,000 students in the second batch
- 1,400 students in the third batch
With this growth trajectory, the institute anticipates reaching an enrollment of 5,000 students in the next five years.
However, it was noted that very few students from the northeastern region had enrolled in the online program. To address this, IIT-Guwahati approached Assam’s Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, with a proposal to mentor 500 students from villages, small towns, and government schools. Approximately 250 students from 28 districts participated in this mentoring program, which lasted for a month at the institute.
Following the mentoring, a test was conducted, resulting in 80 students qualifying for the online course, with 72 receiving admission offers. Notably, these students are being supported with full fee waivers, further encouraging participation from underprivileged backgrounds.
Future Plans and Expansion
Prof. Jalihal emphasized that IIT-Guwahati is dedicated to expanding its AI education initiatives beyond Assam. The institute has already engaged in discussions with the education minister of Tripura to extend similar training programs for teachers in that state. This collaborative effort aims to uplift the educational standards across the northeastern region of India.
Conclusion
The introduction of AI education in Assam by IIT-Guwahati represents a significant milestone in the region’s educational landscape. By training teachers, developing relevant textbooks, and providing mentoring opportunities, the institute is laying the groundwork for a future where students are well-versed in essential technological skills. As AI continues to permeate various aspects of life, initiatives like these are crucial in preparing the next generation for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
