Maharashtra police, IIT, Navy launch app to monitor coastal vessels
In a significant step towards enhancing coastal security, the Maharashtra police have collaborated with the Indian Navy and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to launch a mobile application named Marine Domain Awareness (MDA). This innovative app aims to monitor suspicious vessels along Maharashtra’s extensive 877-kilometer coastline, which stretches from Palghar to Sindhudurg.
Purpose of the Marine Domain Awareness App
The primary objective of the MDA app is to fill a critical gap in coastal security by effectively tracking smaller vessels, such as fishing and passenger boats, that often operate without proper identification systems. This initiative is particularly important given the increasing concerns regarding maritime security and illegal activities along the coast.
App Functionality
The MDA app has been developed under the guidance of a professor from IIT Madras and is designed to track approximately 32,000 boats operating along Maharashtra’s coastline. This includes:
- 28,000 fishing vessels
- 4,000 passenger boats
To facilitate real-time tracking, fishermen and passenger boat operators will be provided with mobile phones equipped with the MDA app. The application has already undergone successful testing on 100 fishing boats over a period of one month, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability.
Surveillance Setup
The monitoring of vessel activity will be centralized at a control room located at the Mahim Sagari Police Station. In addition to this central hub, additional control rooms are planned across seven coastal districts to ensure comprehensive real-time surveillance and faster emergency response capabilities.
Inspector General of Police Rajiv Jain, who oversees Maharashtra’s coastal security operations, stated that the implementation of this system would significantly enhance both surveillance and response capabilities. Authorities are also collaborating with the Department of Telecommunications to improve connectivity between vessels and control rooms, ensuring seamless communication.
Security Upgrade and Community Participation
Once the MDA app is fully operational, registered Indian vessels will be able to send identifiable “green” signals. In contrast, any unidentified or suspicious vessels entering Indian waters will trigger a “red” alert. This system is designed to facilitate rapid response measures, with speed boats from the coastal police, the Indian Coast Guard, and the Indian Navy being deployed for patrol and emergency situations.
Moreover, the MDA initiative emphasizes the importance of community participation. Fishermen will be trained to identify suspicious activities and assist authorities in safeguarding the coastline. This collaborative approach not only enhances security but also fosters a sense of responsibility among local communities.
Conclusion
The launch of the Marine Domain Awareness app marks a significant advancement in coastal security for Maharashtra. By leveraging technology and promoting community involvement, this initiative aims to create a safer maritime environment. As the app becomes fully operational, it is expected to play a crucial role in monitoring and protecting the state’s coastline from potential threats.
